Car Maintenance Tips: from Brakes to ACs

By: Melissa Langley

Regular checks and tune ups is a must for any vehicle. This ensures your car of a longer life, which means you won't have to spend your money in buying a new one. Of course, the brand of the car is a separate factor; however, any decent car owner should know the basic ways of maintaining and keeping your car in good shape. A visit to the auto repair shop twice a year to get a tune up is recommended.

BRAKES

New and used car brake fluid is essential to proper braking and should be flushed at least once every two years. You can actually do this on your own but if you're unsure, always seek the help of a professional auto repair shop. If your brake pedal feels noticeably softer or tougher than usual; or if it sinks to the floor when stepped on, that indicates your car has a brake fluid leak or a defective master cylinder. This needs to be checked immediately.

Air bubbles within the brakes' line can also cause problems such as overheating and foaming of the brake fluid. If you can't remember when you last had your car brakes checked, have it done soon.

TUNE-UPS

In the past, car maintenance was required every 15,000 miles or so. Checking and adjusting the points and ignition timing needed to be done often; and spark plugs and fuel filters never lasted much more than 15,000 miles.

Today, point ignitions and leaded gas are a thing of the past. Tune-ups on today's new cars are only necessary every 50,000 miles or so and involve replacing the spark plugs, wire set, possibly the fuel filter, the air filter, and hooking the car up to an engine diagnostic system to diagnose problems before they become critical. Auto service vendors will need you to leave your car for at least 3 to 4 hours so do this on a weekend if you're a busy person.

WHEELS AND TIRES

Rotating one's tires and wheels is recommended every 5000 miles. Rotating your wheels makes sure your vehicle's steering capacity remains in good shape. While you do this, you can also have the pressure of your tires checked to make sure they are not too hard or lacking in air. Note that the right amount of tire pressure contributes to your fuel efficiency factor.

Used tires need to be replaced at least once in two years, depending on the type of driving you do. Choose new tires from trusted brands like Dunlop or Michelin. Buying cheap new tires will leave you spending a lot more in the long run.

AUTO AC REPAIR AND MAINTENANCE

Check anti-freeze and coolant levels weekly. If you find that levels are low, you will want to fill it to the maximum fill mark. An important reminder that you should keep in mind is to dilute the coolant with water before actually filling it. You can buy a premixed coolant that you can keep in your car for those times when you are out and about and need a quick change. Auto AC repair shops recommend that you do not do this on your own if you have little experience. The wrong mix of coolants can jeopardize your ACs life.

Auto service shops generally charge by the hour. Costs will vary on the type of maintenance service you're asking for and that excludes parts replacement; however, investing a little time of stuff like rotating your wheels and checking your brakes can go a long way of you plan on using your car for a while.

How To Clean Car Windows

By: Jeremy Smith

Vehicle windows get dirty quickly from driving, or even just sitting in the garage or driveway. Thankfully, they are easy to clean with just a little glass cleaner and some cleaning towels.

Cleaning auto glass is really a three-step process. First, wash the entire car with soap and water. Soft cotton rags work best for this, as they are absorbent and do not scratch the paint even when used with mild scrubbing. It is best to clean the interior of the vehicle, and especially the doors, first. That way, dust and dirt are not transferred to the already clean windows.

Next, clean the glass both inside and out with the glass cleaner of your choice. Finally, wipe the entire car down with clean cotton rags for a streak-free shine. It is best to do this on an overcast day, as cleaning a car in direct sunlight or trying to clean warm glass can leave streaks, which spoils the effect.

To clean the inside of the windshield, sit in the passenger's seat and wipe it down carefully with one of the cleaning towels or rags dampened with just a little cleaner. Wipe up and down and side to side, with long even strokes, then buff with a clean, dry cloth. Take special care around the rearview mirror, because you do not want to knock it loose or leave an uncleaned area around it, and very carefully clean the mirror itself.

Next, clean the side windows. If the window is in a frame, roll it down about an inch so that the top is showing. Clean the top first, then buff it dry. Next, roll it up and clean the rest of the window. Pay special attention to the corners, because they attract the worst smears and streaks. Remember to clean the driver’s and passenger’s side mirrors as well.

The inside of the rear window should be done last, because it is often the hardest to reach. The best was to clean the corners and edges of the rear glass is with the back of the hand, pushing the cloth where it needs to go.

If the car is not new, there may be dirt and grime built up around the corners and trim of the windshield and rear window. This can be removed with an old toothbrush or detailing brush and a bit of glass cleaner. A towel or some cotton rags at the base of the window will catch drips and keep this from leaving streaks.

If you are interested in microfiber towels or bar mops, be sure to visit US Wiping.

How Regular Maintenance Helps You Avoid Costly Car

By: Kris Carlson

Sometimes people hesitate to perform regular maintenance on their vehicles. They think, "It’s working fine right now, so why would I spend time and money on it?"

However, it’s the regular maintenance that is a key factor in keeping your vehicle running properly. Without it, you could find yourself facing costly car repairs, many of which could have been prevented with the proper care.

So what parts of your car should be getting a regular checkup? Read through the six steps below to make sure you’re covering your bases and keeping your car in good shape.

Six Car Maintenance Steps You Don’t Want to Skip

1. Oil changes. Getting your oil changed every 3,000 is a must for keeping your car in good working condition. If your oil ever runs out you risk damaging your car permanently, so don’t pass up this necessary step.

2. Windshield essentials. Keeping your windshield clean will help it stay in good condition for years to come. You will probably need to replace your windshield wipers every 6-12 months. If they are leaving streaks, it’s a good sign they need to be replaced. Windshield washer fluid and the accompanying nozzles should be checked monthly for proper operation.

3. Tires. Your tires are responsible for many of your car’s operations, so it’s essential to keep them in good condition. Two of the things you want to regularly check are tire pressure and tire tread. Your manufacturer’s manual should tell you how often to check the pressure, but it’s a good idea to do it monthly in cold temperatures. Have your tire treads checked every time you get an oil change to make sure they are being evenly worn down.

4. The engine. Most people aren’t going to check their own engines for proper functionality, but you can check your engine air filter for cleanliness. Every six months or 7,500 miles you should check the air filter to see how dirty it is. If you can hold it up to a light bulb and still see through most of it, it’s clean enough to function properly.

5. The battery. Every few months – and more frequently in cold weather – you should check your battery cables to make sure they are securely attached to their terminals. Clean any corrosion from the terminals themselves.

6. Coolant levels. You always want your coolant level to be between the low and the high markings on the semi-transparent bottle that holds it. Once your engine is cool you can open the hood to check the level. If it’s too low, simply unscrew the cap and add some more.

Keep your car in great condition by paying attention to these details and performing regular maintenance where needed. You might hesitate to pay for these things in the moment, but they are much less expensive than a major car repair down the road.

Refrigerated Trailer Repair with Quick Patch System

By: Jack Hanson

Refrigerated trailers, railcars and containers can be configured so as to enclose a single, big cargo space. Their refrigeration units will accordingly maintain the entire cargo space at the exact same temperature and humidity unless the cargo location is somehow divided. Even so, when the perishable cargo does not fill the entire trailer, cooling the entire cargo region is unnecessary and expensive. It causes unnecessary strain and wear on the refrigeration unit, increases fuel consumption, raises transportation expenses, and lengthens the time required to cool the perishable cargo right after any temperature aberration. It also reduces the service life of a unit before refrigerated trailer repair becomes needed.

Refrigerated trailers are used to move goods which would rot or turn poor if they were to get to warm. The heat alone would be sufficient in many parts of the country to spoil many kinds of goods, but inside a metal trailer it can get many degrees hotter than ambient temperatures, even inside the hottest part of the country. This heat can accelerate the damage or devaluation of precious cargo.

The refrigerated trailers which are utilized to transport food products are frequently bigger than those utilised inside the medical courier business. Virtually each and every type of food needs to be kept cool at is shipped across the country. Trailers are also obtainable that cool at a variety of temperatures. You can find slightly cool units for transporting things like produce, and also those which can be frozen entirely inside for moving frozen foods or issues like fish which require to be kept on ice.
Repairing refrigerated trailers depends on the trailer construction; fortunately interior panel style is relatively consistent across different manufacturers. Renting refrigerated trailers is an perfect alternative for restaurants undergoing renovation, organization picnics, special events, family or school reunions, film set catering, emergency food storage and time-sensitive fresh cargo like flowers or medicine.

Refrigerated trailer repair and maintenance are critical considerations for fleet operators. Refrigerated units utilised by transport companies for shipping perishable goods want to stay cool in the course of their cross-country routes. Probably the most common use of a trailer like this is for the transporting of food stuffs. Produce, meat, and seafood all must travel rapidly from their point of origin to the stores which are selling them. Obviously, they also need to be kept in a temperature controlled environment if they're to be kept from spoiling. Clients that deal in fresh foods are the most typical utilizers of refrigerated trailer options. A damaged Kem-Lite interior panel can spoil an entire load due to high temperatures. As such, high volume operators need to be conscious of refrigerated trailer repair and maintenance possibilities.

Refrigerated trailers carry valuable and perishable cargo. To safeguard the trailers and their high-value contents, successful fleet management is critical. Fleet managers need to understand each and every trailer’s location and its compliance with temperature control objectives. Sadly, current methods for managing trailers are frequently pricey, inefficient, time-consuming and ineffective. Managing a fleet of refrigerated trailers can be a difficult task, but good quality fleet goods can assist.

Premium Auto Detailing - Can You REALLY Get it From That Car Wash?

By: Jimmy Hoss

Alright, let's talk about CAR WASHES.

Your big industrial-like car washes are... well, they're like an assembly line where they send them through an automatic system, pretty simple process...

Usually, to start, they'll pull up to a vacuum area, where, how well you get your car vacuumed out pretty much depends on which minimum-wage guy you get, and what kind of mood he's in that day. Let's just tell the truth about it here. Sometimes you get a good deal. Other times, well, you've taken your car to these washes. You know just what I'm talking about here.

Then they pull them around to the next stage where a crew will spray them off, and they might add any cleaners (that are way too STRONG) to your tires or wheels... usually they've got a really strong degreaser, or a really strong bug remover, something like that, and then they pressure wash the vehicle off really quickly and just send it through, where they're usually put on a track system...

This system... it's an automatic thing. They'll put your car in neutral, and the track system grabs on to it, takes over... and starts pulling your car through this long tunnel.

In the tunnel, it gets sprayed with a bunch of recycled water from all the other vehicles, all the contaminants, that have already been through there, a sometimes they're hit by brush, sometimes they are touchless... either way it's the same. Either they're blasted or they're hit with a lot of these rubber-felt things that are pretty rough, as it's coming out of that end. Better than keeping your car dirty all the time, for sure... but really not all that good for the long-term health of your paint job.

So it gets through the tunnel, where it practically gets beat up with these strips that are supposed to scrub it... which works by rotating at high speeds, and basically slapping your car a whole lot as they come around. So your car is essentially grabbed at the front end, pulled through this tunnel where it gets slapped around a bunch (probably wondering what it did that would make you so mad at it that you would punish it this way. I mean, think about it... to you, you're washing your car, trying to clean it up, make it look pretty. To your car, you're pretty much sending it in there to get spanked, beat up, abused... it might come out a little bit shinier, what passes for clean--if you really don't know CLEAN--but I imagine you probably hurt its feelings pretty good...)

Okay, anyway, so at the other end of the tunnel, usually there'll be a guy that jumps in it, who's going to make a quick pass at your console, then you'll have guys who will wipe down your inside windows pretty quickly, and the guy that jumps in your front driver's seat, he'll wipe down your dash, your front console, your window, that kind of thing...

There are usually three or four guys there. One guy gets the back driver's window, the other guy gets the two on the other side, and they'll dry the vehicle down really quickly as it's coming out of the end of the tunnel and there's some air blowing there too that helps that process out. The front end driver pulls it out, a few guys come out, wipe down the door jambs, maybe finish drying it off if it needs that.

At some of them, they might upsell you a little bit to it by adding dressing to your tires, things like that.
And they might pull it out of there and put some wax on, which is usually a BAD idea at this point for several reasons...

Is your car REALLY clean? Really? There are still a lot of contaminants in your paint if you haven't treated it with a clay bar, and by waxing, you're just sealing them in, making sure the sun really wears on them really well, and doing long-term damage to your paint.

And what kind of wax are they using? What's in it? What does it do? What does it mean? Some things to think about.

So it's bad enough, with the waxing, when it's just a hand application (you know, the squirt on a little pad, run the pad over the car, wait a minute or two, then wipe if off kind of thing.)

By the way, can you believe this passes for "PREMIUM" treatment at most places? Something else to think about. Once you know more about this stuff (and I'll be posting quite a few articles dealing with the different levels of service and their process, explaining a lot about waxes and paint correction, that sort of thing... so stay tuned) it should be enough to make you really squirm next time you see some "Car Wash" place try to upsell you on a "Premium Detail Service" when you realize what it actually is you're getting.

So, what I just described is the process you'll run into at most of your commercial car washes. Bad enough, right? It gets worse...

See, you REALLY get into problems when someone puts a buffer on it who doesn't know what they are doing (and if they are buffing, or "polishing" your car, as they call it, without having done a clay bar treatment to remove the contaminants in the paint, I promise you they DON'T know what they are doing) because what happens at this point is the machine takes all these contaminants and swirls them around and grinds them into your paint. The buffing pad becomes the equivalent of sandpaper, and you can really destroy a paint job here. Of course, just that kind of thing is done every single day at a lot of these large, industrial car-washes.

And that's about it... that's your standard car wash...

I mean, look, if you have an old car that isn't worth all that much, just some beater you use to get around town, yeah, take it to a car wash. I'm not trying to put them down. They do their thing, and there's value in it for a lot of folks. It's WAY better than just letting dirt and contaminants continue to accumulate and never wash it at all... that's the WORST thing you can do. And that's fine for a lot of folks.

But what I'm doing here in this series of articles is going through the different levels of care and maintenance for your car, showing the difference between the levels that, of course, none of them are going to tell you, if they even KNOW it, because, well, it's not all that good for their business to admit a lot of this stuff to you.

But this article series is about... trying to educate you a little about all this, show the difference, so that when you make a decision about which level you're going to choose for the long-term care and maintenance for your car, it's an INFORMED decision... that you have the facts about what you're dealing with... how it fits together.

So yeah, the car wash, which is basically what I'd call "Level 1" is fine for a lot of folks. Not trying to put them down here. They get dirt off cars, might make them smell good for a little while, that kind of thing. And they provide a lot of jobs for high school kids. There is that. And I guess that's a good thing. Nothing against the car wash.

The car wash is great for a Kia... not so much for your Porsche, or Jag, or Bentley, or Rolls...

If you've got a nicer car, something that's pricy, or a classic or, whatever, you really want to think about the long-term care, and understand the difference between the different levels of service, and how that plays in long-term with preserving and enhancing your car's value and it's beauty...

How to Pick Out Reliable Used Auto Parts

By: Barry Champs

Many people today rely on the services provided by a motor vehicle. At times however, the vehicle's maintenance may require the replacement of parts. An option for sourcing auto parts is the used parts industry. Reusing auto parts is considered recycling. It is a way of not only saving money, but also helping in the preservation of our environment. It is, however, risky to source auto parts that are used, since sometimes these parts do not live up to the consumer's expectations. It goes without saying, therefore, that it is important to develop an awareness of how to pick out reliable used auto parts. This will help to prevent waste of money and unnecessary hassle.

Find Reputable Dealers

Finding reputable dealers may assist in avoiding the purchase of auto parts that are of poor standards. The reputation of the dealer usually has a significant impact on the quality of the product being sold. Good and reliable auto parts therefore will tend to be found at dealers who have a history of superb service and quality. Reputable dealers provide warranties on their products and are approved to carry the products by the manufacturers. Many manufacturers publish the list of approved dealers on their websites.

Since auto shops and garages are typically found in the neighborhood, it may prove beneficial to the consumer to ask around about the reputation of these dealers. Many dealers also have affiliated websites from which information on the products offered may be examined.

Contact Close Circle Sources

Additionally there may be friends or relatives who have used vehicles from which used auto parts may be taken, or they may possess the actual used auto parts desired. Ask these individuals if they have any vehicles or parts that you may be interested in. When the source is a friend or a relative it is less likely that the item will be substandard. Consult a Specialist

It is important to have someone who is trained in auto mechanics to aid in the inspection of the item at the point of sale. This person can help to determine whether the part being targeted for purchase is indeed a good buy or whether the consumer is about to become the victim of a lemon sale. The specialist will also help to ensure that the item purchased is of the appropriate model and year.

Tips on how to pick out reliable used auto parts are very simple and may not seem to take much thought. But when they are adhered to, the consumer stands to reap a number of benefits.

What To Do With Your Auto Scrap Metal?

By: Barry Champs

Many times persons may have small or large amounts of metal in their possession. These may be be left for a while and begin to rust or create an unpleasant sight around homes or work places. The question that arises then is what to do with your auto scrap metal?? There are some steps that can be taken to get rid of the scrap metal in a useful way. These steps may also prove to be very profitable.

What to do with your auto scrap metal??

If for instance you are a typical individual who does not have any interest in the scrap metal industry and just want to get rid of your auto scrap metal, the easiest way is to sell it. There are companies that offer complete recycling of vehicles and pay money for the metal brought forward. One such company is 419 Metal and Auto Recycling Centers, Inc. They take motor vehicles, car batteries, aluminum and other metals. This provides an answer to the problem of having unwanted auto scrap metal. It also provides some money-making opportunity for what you might consider as garbage.

There are a number of purchasers of scrap metal. There are foundries, mills, scrap processors, mini-mills and peddlers. These scrap processors who are commonly called scrap dealers collect the scrap metal. They also sort and process the scrap metal and then finally sell to the foundries, mills and the other purchasers.

The scrap metal industry is somewhat unpredictable. Difficulty is experienced even by experts who are not always able to predict what the product will cost. As what may be the price at one time may not be the same at another time. The costs will be affected by the demand for the scrap metal. If there is a high demand for the scrap metal then the price paid for it will be higher. If there is an abundance of the product on the other hand then the price will be lower. The purchasers are ultimately the ones who decide on the price paid for the commodity.

It does not have to be a problem to get rid of unwanted auto scrap metal. There are a number of economic gains that can be derived from selling the commodity to the various purchasers. One will in turn be compensated for the sale. All that is required is to make the necessary arrangements for the sale and depending on the level of demand, one will be adequately remunerated.

10 Minutes and $20.00 That Could Save Your Life!

By: Fritz Pendergast

Change Your Windshield Wipers

$20.00 and 10 Minutes That Could Save Your Life!
Another article from Waxahachie Auto Repair to help you stay safe on the road.
There's one time we always remember to change our wipers - when it starts to rain. Unfortunately that's the worst time to tackle such an easy job. The next 10 minutes of your time, outside in the dry, sunny weather, should be spent replacing your windshield wipers, so check out these easy steps.

First, you must remove the old worn out wipers. Be careful removing them, the wiper arm is metal and your windshield is glass. One clumsy move and you might scratch or crack the windshield. To remove the old wiper, pull the arm and wiper away from the windshield, it will prop itself in the raised position. With one hand holding the wiper arm, use your other hand to depress the small tab on the underside of the wiper where it meets the metal arm. With the tab depressed you can slide the wiper off the arm by pulling the center toward the bottom of the wiper arm.

The metal windshield wiper arms that hold the wipers are spring loaded this means that without the soft wiper on the end, that metal arm can do some serious damage to your windshield! To prevent the wiper arm from snapping back and hitting your windshield carefully rest it against the windshield padded by a cloth. Even if you just turn around to grab it, play it safe and "park" the arm in the down position.

Looking at the empty wiper arm it can be hard to picture how it all goes back together – still can be for me! The key to getting it done quickly and easily is to line everything up before you start trying to click it all into place.
• Look at the side of the wiper where it attaches to the metal arm, you'll see that one end of the plastic clip is flat and the other has a curve across the top. Rotate the plastic clip until this curve is pointing toward the wiper blade.
• Now hold the wiper upside down next to the metal wiper arm, where you'll see that the curve in the arm (hook shaped) matches the curved top of the plastic clip.
• With everything lined up, lower the wiper over the wiper arm, putting the arm between the sides of the wiper and with the open end of the "hook" facing the plastic clip.
• Move the hook over the plastic clip, then pull the wiper upward so that the clip's rounded edge slides into the hook.
• Pull it tight so the assembly clicks into place.
• Carefully lower the wiper back to the windshield.
• Repeat the whole process for the other side and you're done!

Save Family Car Ownership Costs

By: Bruce Hokin

Your car is one of your most expensive purchases, apart from the family home. It is in your best financial interest to make it work well for you with the least possible expense. There are many, easy ways you can minimize your motoring costs.

Your car will serve you well, and cost effectively, if you take the time to learn a few basic skills. Ready to start? Let's go.

There are many areas where you can save real money when running your car. Some of these are:
- Actual running expenses
- Minimizing serving costs
- Reducing the slide in value as it gets older
Let's look at each of these areas in turn.

Actual Running Expenses - save on day-to-day running costs

a) Go easy on the throttle and the brake pedals. If you anticipate the traffic and road conditions a little more, you can save fuel and brake pad wear. Don't be in such a hurry, go easy on the car controls.

b) Keep the tires at the correct pressure. If they look to be wearing unevenly, get them checked. Get a wheel alignment done at least once a year.
c) Shop around for the best fuel deal. Use coupons or dockets always.

d) When it's time for new tires, shop around. Don't be afraid to ask "What is your best price?" Compare prices and brands. Get to know the most suitable tire for your type of driving needs. Play off one retailer against another. The same goes for brake pads. Don't just accept any quote.

Minimizing Service Costs - keep these to a minimum

a) Learn to do your own oil change and greasing. This is not a very arduous job. I actually enjoy the time under the car. Changing the oil, oil filter and greasing only needs to take less than 1/2 an hour altogether, but can save you a substantial amount of money. Just be sure doing this does not void your warranty. You can also easily change the air filter saving you even more money.

b) Get to know the normal noises your car makes. If at any time these change, see if you can work where the noise is coming from. That way when you go to your mechanic you won't have to say "Just fix it", you will be able to offer some ideas as to the cause of the problem.

c) Keep an eye out for loss of any fluids. This is often a cause of large maintenance costs. Check regularly to ensure the radiator water level, engine oil level, brake fluid level, automatic gearbox oil level, power steering oil and/or clutch fluid levels are all close to, or at, the "full" mark.

d) Look at the garage floor. Has oil been dropped on it recently? Was it from the back or the front of the car? Don't let oil leaks go checked. Get them looked at right away.

e) If you choose to do your oil changes, shop around for the best price on good oil and filters.

f) If your car requires some specialized servicing or repair, shop around. Get competing quotes. Play off one repairer with another to get the best price.

Minimizing the Value Slide - get the most for your car when you sell

a) Keep the car clean inside and out.

b) Keep the car polished at least once a year. Twice a year is better. Use a good brand of polish

c) Use floor mats always. Keep them clean. Keep the carpets vacuumed regularly.

d) Keep a log book of all monies spent on the car and at what mileage/kilometers they were done. Keep the receipts. This will help you get the best price when you sell if prospective buyers can see you looked after the car well.

e) Use a good quality vinyl or leather protector on your dash, seats and door trims to save them from cracking and discoloration, as they get older.

f) Look for rust spots. These can occur around the windscreen, under the doors, in the door sills and other parts of the body. If you notice any, treat them immediately with a good brand rust killer. If you feel unqualified, get a specialist to fix it right away.

g) If you see stone chips, treat them right away. These can turn into rust spots if not cared for. You could either use an auto paint spray can of the same color or touch it up with a small paint brush and touch up paint.

h) The value of your car will be enhanced at sale time if you keep it as close to original condition as possible. Try to look after the car and keep it looking like it would have been when it was new.

These are just some ways you can minimize your car ownership costs and maximize the amount you receive when you go to sell the car.

Bruce Hokin is a self-confessed car tragic, and a qualified accountant. He has created his website to help folks who are finding it tough to keep up with the daily cost of running the family car. There are tips on his site for saving money in all areas of car ownership - how to buy for less, how to run for less and how to sell for more. You are free to access all of these resources at his website http://car-savings-advice.com.

Fuel Stocks - Gauging the Difference

By: Martyn Gent

WITH the relentless hike in fuel costs and increased prevalence in thefts of "liquid gold" from storage tanks, fuel systems specialist Cameron Forecourt is urging companies that store fuel to take a closer look at monitoring and security.

The company, which has more than 30 years’ experience in providing a complete turnkey package of services embracing the supply, installation and maintenance of fuel tank, pumps and their associated control and gauging systems, is helping customers make their tanks and stocks less vulnerable to loss and theft.

With companies often storing many tens of thousands of pounds worth of expensive fuel on site, losses are an increased worry in a business environment subject to ever-increasing costs and volatility.

By combining extremely accurate electronic tank gauging and advanced internet-based monitoring systems, it is possible to provide every tank with an all-seeing electronic eye on stocks.

Cameron has combined market-leading electronic gauging with its new Tankwatch system which provides a live web-based real time link to extremely accurate stock level information round the clock, 365 days a year.

The TankWatch fuel management system combines with Glibarco Veeder Root electronic tank gauging and TLS monitoring equipment distributed, installed and supported by Cameron in the commercial market, to "complete the circle" and provide a total professional wetstock management package.

The TankWatch server, which can be accessed via any web browser, provides live wetstock monitoring as well as alarms for exceptions including overfilling, low stock levels, unusual fuel drawings, leaks and possible theft.

The system uses GPRS communications which allows the user to log on to the fuelling web site using a standard web browser and their unique username and password, so they can see and manage their fleet fuelling from anywhere.

Anomalies are notified using immediate email or text alerts via SMS to PC’s, laptops and mobile devices so that action can be taken to deal with any type of abnormal stock movements.

Comments Cameron Forecourt Sales and Marketing Director Martyn Gent: "The days of relying on bookstock figures and dipping the tanks now and then are truly over. Transport managers need to keep a closer eye on the ball and the tools we are able to provide help them carry out efficient and up to the second wetstock management so that they know exactly where their stock levels are at any time, day or night.

"Gilbarco Veeder Root ‘electronic dipsticks’ and TLS monitoring equipment in conjunction with our TankWatch system takes wetstock management to a new level and can provide timely alerts if something is amiss, whether it is a fault, leak or outright theft."

The system is suitable for all types of installation including underground tanks, above-ground bunded tanks and tall tanks up to 16 metres, which are becoming increasingly popular where confined sites require tanks with a small footprint.

Cameron Forecourt Ltd is a privately owned company offering a truly national maintenance and installation service. Tank Gauging and leak detection systems, pumps, fuel management systems, pipework and electrical systems are just some of the products and services available.

Cleaning and Restoring Hazy Automobile Headlight Lenses

By: David Bynon

Are your vehicle's headlights yellowed, cloudy or scratched? You're not the only one. Unless you provide your car's clear light lenses regular attention, in 24 months or less they can deteriorate to the point of being totally opaque, making it very unsafe to operate your car in the dark and in reduced visibility conditions. The fix is faster than you might believe. The best thing is that you can restore this hazardous and ugly issue in just a few minutes. It's easy once you know the secret.

Why Do Headlamps Turn Yellow and Dull?

The issue is not caused by abuse or neglect, as you might think. It is an environmental problem. Without regular attention, UV light from the sun, acid rain, salt and road debris damage and dull all clear plastics, including headlight covers. If your vehicle has halogen or another type of high-intensity discharge (HID) headlamps, the problem can be worse. These sealed beam units operate at high temperatures, further contributing to degradation and yellowing.

What Is The Solution?

The solution is a quick restoration job. Headlight restoration is a plastic repair process that takes away visible damage and returns clarity to the lenses. Even severe cases of yellowing, hazing, and scratches can be fixed in less than thirty minutes.

You might be wondering why fix instead of buying new? Your headlights are a sealed unit, so you can't simply replace the outer cover. If you have an expensive car with performance lighting, replacement is very expensive. Restoration versus replacement can save you hundreds of dollars per lens, so it's well worth the energy. Plus, it's fast!

What level results can you achieve? It may look hopeless, but chances are the damage is superficial. Even if your headlights are completely opaque, they can be fixed. As long as the plastic has not yellowed completely, you have a very good chance of total restoration.

Experiment With A Gentle Plastic Polish First

If the damage is not severe, you may be able to resolve it with a simple plastic polish from the auto parts store. I suggest trying this step before any other. It won't be wasted time or expense, either, because you need to use the product regularly to maintain your headlights.

NOTE: Never use a household glass cleaning product like Windex on clear plastic. Household glass cleaners contain ammonia, which causes clear plastic to turn yellow.

If the plastic polish alone does not do the job, then you need to repair the damage with a ultra fine sand paper (2000 grit is very safe) and re-glaze to restore a clear finish. While it may seem difficult or complicated, it's not. Wet sanding is fast and easy.

TIP: You can test to see if your headlights will respond to hand polishing with a small dab of tartar control toothpaste. Toothpaste is mildly abrasive. If the small test area seems to get better, then you know polish alone may be all you need.

Wet Sanding & Re-polishing Procedure

To remove the damage with wet sanding and re-polishing, you need the following supplies:

  •     Polishing towels
  •     Bucket of soapy water
  •     Latex gloves (if you have sensitive skin)
  •     Painter's masking tape (1" to 1.5" width is best)
  •     Plastic polish
  •     Wet/dry sand paper (600, 1200, 2000 grit)
  •     Sanding block (1" x 2" erasure works great)
  •     2.5" Velcro backing plate for use with 3/8" drill or cordless drill
  •     3" foam or wool polishing pad with Velcro backing

If you require a pictorial guide, then have a look at my Guide to Detailing blog. Here's the procedure:

STEP 1: Clean the headlamp lenses. A bucket of soapy water works best. Clean the surrounding area, too. Dry thoroughly.

STEP 2: Use painter's masking tape to mask around the headlight. This will help protect your automobile's paint finish. This only takes a few minutes, so don't skip this critical step.

STEP 3: Wet sand each headlight. First determine the amount of damage to each lens. If your headlight lenses are scratched or if they are completely opaque, you will need to start with 600 grit sandpaper. Sand thoroughly, and then progress to1200, then 2000 grit.

If your lenses are not scratched and are only slightly yellowed, you can probably get away with using 2000 grit paper only. The first sanding step is where you will actually remove the scratched and cloudy layer of plastic. The finer grades of sandpaper are to remove the scratches left from the previous grit sandpaper.

As you sand, your sanding water will turn milky. This is the damaged layer being cleaned away. Use plenty of water for lubrication and to keep the sandpaper clean. Keep sanding until the surface feels perfectly smooth. The drippings will become clearer as the damage is taken away. Dry thoroughly between sanding steps to check progress.

STEP 4: Re-glaze headlight lenses using plastic polish on a 3" polishing pad (foam or wool). First connect the Velcro backing plate adapter to your drill.

Apply a small amount of polish to the pad and start polishing the plastic. As the polish begins to dissipate, add a bit more and continue polishing. Stop polishing once the lens is completely clear again. Finish with a final hand polish using a tiny bit of polish on a soft towel or applicator.

STEP 5: Seal to protect. Use a good car sealant to reseal the plastic and protect from the elements.

STEP 6: Maintain monthly with a quality plastic cleaner/polish. The products I recommend most are Plexus and Meguiar's PlastX. If maintained regularly, your car's clear plastic lenses will never need restoring again!

By: Hemant Chourasia

It is beyond a doubt that meeting the demands of our fast paced lifestyle requires us to own an automobile. Be it a fancy sports coupe or a vintage sedan, having a personal mode of conveyance is of utmost importance in the current age. Now as is the case with any man made wonder, every automobile requires regular maintenance to keep functioning normally. This is the reason we all spend a considerable amount over the normal running cost to keep our vehicles in perfect tuning.

Now, when it comes to auto maintenance, it is not the major repairs that cost us the most, it is those recurring small issues that amount to a huge sum by the end of every year. This is the reason it is advisable to have a small home workshop to address minor issues. Having one will not only give you great financial benefit, it will also help you in dealing with critical issues as and when required.

Scan Tools vs Code Readers

By: Jd Durham

Both of these tools have their strengths and weaknesses. Both types will connect to the vehicles’ OBD II port. Both will read codes. Both will clear codes. This is where the two start to differ.

Code Readers were intentionally designed to perform two functions. Read the current codes and clear the codes. Depending on the tool it may offer a generic code description. They are very quick and easy to operate. The learning curve is very easy. This is about the limit of their capability.

Be aware there are some very serious drawbacks to using a Code Reader as a diagnostic tool. You do not know what "Diagnostic Monitors" have completed successfully or which ones failed. You do not know the "Freeze Frame" data. Both of these are needed to diagnose and duplicate the conditions for post repair confirmation.

If you understand that a code is nothing more than an indication of a failure area and requires more investigative work to find the parent problem before just replacing parts and possibly spending money unnecessarily then you will want to own a scan tool. Statistics from many state Environmental Protection Departments show 20% of post repair emissions failures fail a second time.

Scan Tools can read codes (current, pending and permanent), read "Freeze Frame" data, display the data the PCM is transmitting, read the VIN of the vehicle, read the part numbers of the PCM, read conflict data, access the different PCMs, read the monitor states, live graph sensor data, and more. They are quick to connect with the PCM.

Scan Tools come in two versions; the Generic Data capable and the Enhanced Data capable. The Generic Data Scan Tool can be used to diagnose and repair about 80% of the vehicles. The other 20% of repairs need an Enhanced Data Scan Tool plus other specialty diagnostic tools as the problems may be intermittent or require bidirectional control.

Generic Scan Tools usually do not have bidirectional control for pin point testing. The Generic Scan Tools come in several formats; one is the handheld scan tool that typically sells from $99 to several hundred dollars. Many of these handhelds are updateable with a subscription via the internet. This is both a blessing and a curse, as these scan tools could become infected with a virus that could be transmitted to the vehicle. Also this subscription model does increase the cost to own.

The laptop enabled Scan Tool starts under $50 for a good quality tool. They can connect to all OBD II protocols from 1996 to current. Some tools are flash upgradeable to add function. Most are based on an 8 bit program chip. The two largest suppliers of the chips are Micro Electronics and ELM electronics. Micro Electronics is the largest manufacturer and offers more chips with more function capable. ELM is the better known name. There are some cloned chip tools that are cheaper, but quality can be an issue.

There have been reported problems of some scan tools not connecting to vehicles. This happens even with the OEM Enhanced Data scan tools (EG: Tech II). Usually the tool gets blamed, but it rarely is the tool. It usually is the car’s programming and some auto manufacturers instead of fixing the problem code decided to call the foul up a "feature".

Laptop Scan Tools are only limited by the software program. Some are free. The better ones for more professional usage start around $70. Since these scan tools are powered by a laptop, with adequate anti virus protection the probability of infecting a vehicle diminishes. Two of the better ones for the Micro and ELM chip tools are ScanMaster by WG Soft and OBD 2007 by GLM Software. WG Software offers a demo version but it’s severely crippled and doesn’t show the quality of the program. GLM Software offers a fully functional two week trial. Recently they added a free version called "Lite" that retains many of the OBD 2007 capabilities. Software packages will be discussed in a later article.

As you can see these generic data scan tools are a great investment and every mechanic and enthusiast should have one of these in their toolbox even if they own an enhanced data scan tool. In the next article we will discuss the many enhanced data scan tools and present information about the software packages, cost, etc.

Maximize Your Vacuum Truck Productivity with Proper Maintenance!

By: Christopher Hunter

The most vital component of a productive vacuum truck business can be excellent customer service, quality products and an appealing price. When all these factors are combined together, it could be the perfect recipe for a successful business operation. Transposing this into a vacuum truck business means that the services being provided must be of such a quality while maintaining low overhead costs as to result in superior workmanship and service to all customers.

Unlike other businesses, a vacuum truck company’s profitability is affected by the level of productivity it accomplishes which is in turn affected by the number of times the equipment is unusable due to breakdowns that prevent the trucks from working. So this scenario must be avoided as much as possible – which leads to the big question: How can productivity be maximized? The answer is so simple that it should be readily apparent – keep all equipment in its best possible shape.

Routine Maintenance

The first way to keep vacuum trucks properly functioning is to institute a sound routine maintenance program. This is essential to ensure that all equipment is regularly checked for minor damage or problems prior to system failure. Some of the things to be regularly examined would include: a visual check for any leaks; hydraulic fluid levels; all hoses for deterioration and air leaks; and careful examination of the control system. It is imperative to remember that this is not a once-in-a-lifetime activity to be sure that the equipment is functional; this is a thorough examination performed on a regularly-scheduled basis. A vacuum truck company with a good maintenance program can reap significant savings as compared to the cost to repair something that has broken while being used.

Routine Inspection

A vacuum truck can consistently perform hundreds of jobs - when it is properly maintained. To protect the equipment from any costly problems, a pre-inspection should be conducted prior to every job being handled. Establishing a pre-inspection routine can help any business avoid costly equipment failure from happening. System failures can be prevented if all potential problems are discovered before the job begins. A good pre-inspection can eliminate expenses for costly repairs as well as the downtime created when the truck is out-of-service and unable to handle customer needs.

Keep Up With Technology

In this industry, technological advancements bring changes that improve efficiency but also raise the level of knowledge necessary to keep up with such progress. It must be remembered that with constant change comes an increased responsibility to learn the new technology and implement it into every-day working conditions. The negativity of reduced productivity and revenue loss can be completely prevented if equipment is maintained and technology is leveraged in the proper way. All of this can be averted by taking the above-listed necessary steps to increase efficiency, boost performance and augment productivity.

At the end of the day, the completion of a productive working period without interruptions due to breakdowns, system failure or unwanted repairs in the middle of the job should be of vital concern to every vacuum truck business. Keep that vacuum truck in top shape to increase productivity and the results will be overwhelming!

Starting Green with Waterless Car Washing

By: Mark Quezada

Quezada Mobile Car Wash began its mobile waterless car wash and detail operations in April 2010.We are a new type of mobile car wash service in our area; Des Plaines, IL using Eco-Friendly Waterless products. We are firm believers that the best type of car wash not only cleans a vehicle inside and out, but it also protects the environment.

What make the Waterless products "Eco-Friendly"?

Part of that answer is in the safe ingredients contained within the products we use and the other part is the waterless cleaning concept based on the products...and other products like the ones we use.

The Eco-Friendly Car Care products that we use are water-based. And since they are water-based, that means they can be used on wet or dry surfaces. A lot of the competition out there uses products that are petroleum-based; kerosene based or uses mineral spirits. Now, how can that be "green"?

The Eco-Friendly Waterless products we use contain plant-derived surfactants (coconut), water-soluble polymers, organic solvent (soy-based), preservative, filtered water. It is the "Eco Friendlier" alternative.

The Eco-Friendly Waterless products we use work Great! smell great and are very easy to use. The performance of these products are supreme in the industry, however we would like our customers to be the final judge.

According to The EPA cleaning a vehicle, at home in your driveway, using soap and a water hose, can waste up to 116 gallons of water per car wash. The soil and grunge stuck to an automobile's exterior surface can be a combination of soils, oils, grease and other horrible compounds. The dirty soap and excess water runoff can contaminate local waterways, neighborhood soils and commercial locations. Most cities require commercial locations to use an oil-water separator to filter the wastewater when cleaning their fleet vehicles on their premise. Automatic car washes use about 40 gallons of water per car wash, wasting immeasurable amounts of energy and require an oil/ water separator. In addition, they have been known to scratch and damage the exterior surface of cars.

The "waterless" cleaning concept is truly "Green". It maximizes water conservation, protects the local waterways and reduces the strain on our eco-system. We would like to add that the Eco-Friendly Waterless products can be applied virtually anywhere/ anytime; is very easy to use and its performance is outstanding!

How does it work? What is the procedure?

When cleaning a car with our Eco-Friendly Waterless products, we spray the product on a damp microfiber towel and the surface we are cleaning. This dual wet/ soap combination diminish friction. The mild soaps & lubricants; in the waterless product instantly break up the dirt and grime on contact. Then we gently rub in the waterless product with a damp microfiber towel. This microfiber towel absorbs and lifts away the liquefied soils from the surface without scratching the paint. Afterwards we buff the remaining wet residue into a brilliant shine with a second microfiber towel.

- No water wasted (or used)
- No impact on the environment
- No contamination of the local water ways, soils or the cleaning locations.

The process of cleaning vehicles with Eco-Friendly waterless product is powered by "people", not a machine, which helps save energy and other natural & man-made resources.

In conclusion: The Eco-Friendly Waterless Car Wash products we use are considered "green" because they are non-toxic, readily biodegradable and ammonia free.

For additional information on Eco-Friendly Waterless Car Washing and the mobile car wash/detailing services we provide to the Des Plaines, IL and Metro areas, please stop by our website at http://www.quezadamobilecarwash.com
