Laser scanning with reverse engineering applications

By: Dan Sever

The castings for the classic rare cars and classic Harley Davidson motorcycles would never have been replicated if not for reverse engineering technology. This breakthrough makes use of laser imaging of complicated 3D objects, allowing the users to rebuild the plans or blueprints of many life-saving devices, luxury vehicles, airplanes and other machines.

ReverseEngineering.com assimilates the MicroScribe with the Kreon Skiron laser scanning machinery using patented reverse engineering technology to accommodate the industries in the aviation, defense and other sectors.

Thanks to ReverseEngineering.com, the software for this technology is made easily available to those who need to rebuild or enhance on existing objects which no longer have the initial plans or that can be best enhanced through 3D laser imaging.

If you are hooked on older autos or bikes, then you would have understood a long time ago how difficult and expensive it is to get castings of the parts, specifically when the original plans are gone or have been destroyed. Manufacturers used to consider this a nightmare especially when they needed to come up with an enhanced version of these specific vehicles. OEM Castings are usually made available only for repairs or for a handful of vehicles. What happens when the castings or OEM parts no longer exist?

The auto-racing industry is one of those that characteristically has a special need for laser scanning with reverse engineering. Racing is a specially risky career, and while the drivers are livewires and push their limits, they would not be so absentminded to careen down the track at 180 miles per hour without any assurance that the suspension parts in his or her vehicle will work.

ReverseEngineering.com makes sure that the moldings for vehicles are exactly recreated. It would normally take a lot of money to do that, but thanks to reverse engineering it is now feasible to reproduce very precise castings in a cost-effective way.

Most vintage autos are limited production and that also is applicable for the technical documentation. Via reverse engineering, manufacturers can reproduce the parts and every nook and cranny of the autos with minimal effort, while keeping exact to their geometry.

Not long ago, manufacturers were discouraged when they visited all the professional foundries only to see that they could not reproduce the casts. Apparently, the skill levels of the original producers were way beyond what the current generation could match. With the MicroScribe 3D laser imaging, manufacturers can now recreate a 3D digital replication of the vehicles and build a database that will aid them in improving current technology.

The finest facet about MicroScribe’s reverse engineering machines is that they are able to precisely create 3D computer models of almost all objects, whatever the size and shape. And those things can effortlessly be accomplished in the span of a few minutes! The tangible world has almost become conquerable thanks to reverse engineering technology.

Imagine how manufacturers can further existing technology for race cars and you will understand that the present speed known to humanity may just be history in a short time. With reverse engineering, it is quite easy to be amazed with the many opportunities and potential that we can achieve nowadays not only in the industry of racing and car production but also in science, animation and the arts.

How Can I Find Cheap Car Tyres?

By: Jennifer Biggins

In today's economic climate, consumers are trying to find ways to save money. Along with the increased cost of gasoline, proper vehicle maintenance is becoming more expensive every day. Consumers can save a substantial amount of money by finding ways to buy cheap tyres. Below are some of them.

Salvage yards

There are many cars, trucks and SUV's that have been wrecked and sent to the salvage yards. Most still have very good parts on them and are sold as used. This includes selling their used tyres. With such a big selection of vehicles, the chances of finding used cheap ones that will fit a specific automobile is high. The best thing about buying used tyres at salvage yards is that they are usually very cheap.

The treads can be checked to see if they pass inspection by sticking a penny or a nickel in the indenture between them. If the head is not showing, the tyres should pass. Also, to help make sure that the tyres have not dry-rotted, check the inspection on the front windshield. If it is not very old, the tyres should be okay.

Service stations

Many service stations repair and change vehicle tyres. At times, customers ask for their tyres to be changed off even if they still have plenty of tread on them and they could still pass the state inspection. Some of these stations keep the used tyres. Asking them if they have any for sale may provide a cheap alternative to buying new ones. Service stations have to pay to dispose of any tyres that they do not want to keep so they very well might sell them.

Department discount stores

Some of the large department discount stores carry automobile supplies. Many of them sell these supplies considerably less than regular auto shops. Tyres can be bought usually at 20 to 30 percent discount.

Tyre discount stores

Tyre discount stores usually offer wider selections when trying to find inexpensive tyres. They buy in bulk and can sell them cheaper than department discount stores. These stores can also be found online. They may offer extra incentives for buying them online, such as free shipping.

Auto tyre shops

Every so often, these specialty stores will offer sales that are really good buys. Tyres can be bought rather cheaply. Some have even advertised that if a customer buys one tyre, the second tyre will be free. Other sales can include cheap prices for tyres that are going to be discontinued and not sold in the future by them.

There are many places that consumers can look to buy really cheap tyres. After only a few minutes of searching, real bargains can be found.

The Five Main Types of Tyres For All Driving Conditions

By: Jennifer Biggins

Choosing car tyres is not always an easy decision for most motorists. Where to buy them, what kind to buy, and of course, the budget, is the price of the tyre really worth its coin? Every car has factory tyres that were made for that car and sticking with them is not a bad decision but there are other factors to consider.

First of all, what type of tread is needed? Where does the motorist live and what types of roads and terrain does the car travel on? Dirt roads or gravel roads will need a better grip tyre, while a car that travels a lot of highway miles will need a harder rubber tyre that will last longer and be quieter than the mountain climbing tyres.

There are five main types of tyres for all driving conditions.

1. Standard or all season tyres. This tyre's name says it all. It is good in wet or dry pavement, rain or snow and has a harder rubber compound that gives the tyre longer life. The tread pattern also cuts down on the noise and allows a quite smooth highway drive.

2. ALL Terrain Tyres. This tyre has the best grip and is designed to tackle any mountain the motorist can drive on.

Its tread design is for handling gravel, dirt roads, mud tracks, and sand dunes.

3. Winter Tyres. These tyres are not the most quite since they have little metal studs in their treads for gripping into snow packed roads. They are used only in the winter but insure safety to the motorist under extreme slippery conditions.

4. Performance Tyres. These tyres are for the warmer climates where the pavement gets really hot. They are made of a softer rubber compound that grips the hot pavement, but handles poorly on wet or slippery roads.

5. Run Flat Tyres. This tyre is different from the others because it allows the motorist to drive for a while to safety if they have received a puncture to cause a flat.

Finding the best price for tyres isn't that easy but here are something's to take in consideration. The best deals come with package buying. Many dealers offer buy three tyres get one free, or buy four rims and get half price tyres.

Online tyre prices may be cheaper but there is a shipping cost and a lot of dealers will offer free installation or free mounting and balancing with tyre purchase. Some dealers will offer lifetime tyre rotation and balancing, so there is a lot to consider.

The most important thing to remember, whatever tyre is needed, proper maintenance is a must. Make sure the car's tyres are properly inflated and properly aligned, this will add to the life of the tyre and the safety of the passengers.

What Do You Know About Car Restoration

By: Stephanie Andrew

Restoring any type of car can take many months, if not years. It all depends on what state the car is in when you first buy it (or rescue it, as some would say). You also have to find the relevant parts and fix each part in turn so you can be sure to get it back into full working order. This may be more difficult in some cases than others. If you have always set your heart on having a particularly rare car from the Fifties, you will probably find the parts are harder to get than if you chose a more popular model from the Seventies. So it is usually worth doing a spot of research to see how practical a particular car restoration job will be before you buy the car itself. Also checking out if when restored you can purchase a car warranty and checking what could void the warranty.

Another point to consider is how skilled you are at working on cars. Many people are capable of doing a simple oil change and performing many other regular tasks. But these tasks are generally performed on a modern car – and they’re nothing like the tasks you would be doing if you were restoring an old or vintage vehicle of some kind. So it makes sense to ensure you know what you’re getting yourself into before you get started.

You should also be aware that car restoration can be anything from an involved job to a ‘starting from scratch’ kind of job. It’s one thing to find a car from two or three decades ago that needs a fair bit of work doing to it. It’s quite another to find an old rusting wreck with no wheels in the middle of a field that could hark back half a century or so. How far would you go to get the car of your dreams and would you be capable of restoring it to the degree you want?

The good news is that there are services out there that can help with various car restoration jobs as well. This means that if you feel able to tackle some jobs but not others, there is help at hand to see you through to the finished car.

It’s realistic to allow plenty of time to work on a car restoration job. Many people focus on it as a hobby, so they are able to enjoy it in their spare time and watch as the car gradually starts to edge closer to what it would originally have looked like. And who knows, this could soon be your hobby too. I would purchase a car warranty when my car is finished that way i can protect my new/old car.

When buying any vehicle, it's wise to consider the effects of depreciation. Buying a car warranty or extended car warranties from company's such as OneStopWarranty as an online company can help UK motorists save money on their gap insurance, for example, by buying direct from the insurer.

Auto Restoration 101: Essential Tips for Used Car Restoration

By: Vannessa Gabbett

Car buffs from all over the world know restoring a car is an exciting activity, especially if it’s a classic. It can be a great activity for anyone including you as you’ll get to practice your creativity and mechanical skills. Whether you’re restoring a newly purchased used car or your old model, here are some things to consider so that you can make the most out of the restoration project. Below is a helpful guide to many of the steps needed before an automobile restoration.

Determine the Type of Project

Before knuckling down your car for restoration purposes, you must list all components that need repair. Your vehicle’s model and condition will determine just how much restoration is needed. Decide whether it’s a minimal restoration project or a major one.

Set a Budget

By this time, you must already have allocated a budget for the restoration procedure. No one said the process comes cheap. In fact, if you don’t set and evaluate your budget, it’ll cost you for there are many parts you need to consider. Have a budget set for auto body kits, engine hoist, electrical testers, paint booth, and other car components.

Decide on the Level of Restoration

There are different restoration levels, according to used car dealers in Kelowna. One is driver restoration which is restoring a car back to its operational condition; the street show is for major repairs of a car’s cosmetic problems; the show car is the type of repair done for classic models; and the concours involves major overhaul of the car – from the interior up to its exterior.

Assess Your Abilities

At this point, you must already decide whether or not you’re going to hire a professional to aid you in the restoration of the car. It’s hefty work, and isn’t ideal for novice car owners. If you think you’re fully equipped to handle the job, go for it. But if the whole process is proving to be a little difficult, hire a professional auto restorer as suggested by used car dealers in Kelowna. Some restoration businesses focus on one model or cars made by only one manufacturer. This allows them to focus all their energies on learning as much as they can about a particular car or maker, serving their clientele with expert knowledge that a generic shop may not have.

Keep the Car Well-Maintained

Jaguar S Type Shifter Part malfunction

By: Bruce Sweigert

A very common difficulty with the 1999-2002 Jaguar S-Type cars can be breakage in the pricey shifter assembly for the automatic transmission. And to make matters worse, this shifter assembly has been on back-order from Jaguar for nearly a year or longer without ETA for new stock at the time of this listing.

The aluminum shift block replaces the weak plastic piece that fails on all Jaguar shifter assemblies. No need for a used shifter assembly or new shifter assembly from dealer! Save you hundreds of dollars.

Disconnect shifter assembly from vehicle, detach shift cable and install new aluminum shifter block. Reinstall to get a lifetime of trouble free shifting.

No more applying the parking brake to shift in or out of gear! No costly tows to the repair shop or dealer!

Shifter block malfunction is the most typical repair I see at Lansing Professional Fleet Auto Repair that fails in the Jaguar S-Types. I will be able to save you thousands of dollars, headaches and miss diagnosis of this problem.

I myself believe Jaguar S Types are utter garbage and I feel sorry for everybody who has bought one and desire to influence any future individuals from ever buying one. If you happen to be among the blessed ones who've not had any of these repairs fail with your S-Type or Lincoln LS you happen to be extremely lucky.

In case you didn't know these cars are sisters, meaning they are identical, they share several similar components and style flaws. The three most typical problems are as follows.

Shift linkage breaks and vehicle will not go into or come out of park, front lower ball joints or front struts rattle and clunk, and rear of vehicle clunks and rattles awfully from bad lower strut bushings.

Shifter failure is the most typical and costly repair relating to the Jaguar S-Type. Sadly doing it once will not guarantee it is not going to happen for a second time. many owners learn a few days or months later the shifter breaks again. Average cost of this repair is $500-1000.00 Currently Jaguar has no supplier for the failed shifter assembly also to my knowledge I purchased the last new one back in December of 2009! I've obtained second-hand ones on EBay for about 100.00 since then I've seen them under $200 every now and then.

Why does this component break down you may ask? Well from the manufacture's genius design and production skills they decided that a tiny plastic block the dimensions of half your hand is resilient enough to handle the force of your complete weight of your vehicle, the shifter itself, the transmission, the shift cable and regular wear on these parts.

To this day no recall continues to be issued as they do not think this is a safety concern or not enough people are injured (just your pockets) from this part failing.

I discovered an aftermarket company who will now be selling an alternate design ($179-$269) that may once and for all handle shifter block breakdown.

Knowing How To Replace The Fuel Filter On Your Pickup Truck

By: Steve Smart

Knowing how to replace the fuel filter on your pickup truck is absolutely crucial in order to maintain the health and reliability of your vehicle. Though it is essential to have a filter attached to the vehicle, in order to prevent dirt, corrosion and water build-up, it is also important that you do not let the filter get blocked or clogged with pollutants. If this happens, there is the danger of not enough fuel reaching the truck's engine.

If this should happen for any reason, the vehicle will have difficulty running. In some cases it may stop working completely. For this not to happen, knowing how to replace the device is strongly suggested. Make sure that the engine gets the clean, unpolluted petrol its needs. You must first concentrate on parking the car on level ground and in a relatively quiet place. Once this is done, you will be required to relieve the petrol system pressure of the vehicle. If you are not aware of how to do this for the specific model, finding out is simple. Just detach the fuel panel which will be located beneath the dashboard.

Once this has been done, it is necessary to turn the engine on and keep it running in neutral until it starts to stop from a lack of petrol. This is evident and you will notice the engine's change of pace almost immediately. When you notice this, get hold of the battery and use a wrench to pull out the black negative wire. Once this is done, in order to relieve the fuel pressure you must unscrew the fuel cap from the tank. After doing this, you will be ready to move on effectively and safely.

After this has been done, it is time to identify the device in question. It will most often be located near the fuel tank, mounted on the left or right hand side of the frame rail. To operate efficiently, make sure you have enough room to fit adequately under the vehicle and manoeuvre as you see fit. If you cannot do so, use a jack or similar device to get it up as much as possible. This will give it the support that is needed.

Concentrate on disconnecting the fuel line from the filter, once you know you have identified it. The connection is held together by connect fittings and a plastic lock. For the disconnection to be possible, you may just need a screwdriver or similar tool to disengage the lock before simply pulling it out with the fingers. Certain models will require you to use a special tool for this purpose, which should be available at most auto parts suppliers and garages for a small price. This process might get a little messy on account of the petrol and the dirt, so carry a rag or a towel to deal with spillages and leaks.

Once you have disconnected the petrol line successfully, you will need to think about how to remove the filtering device itself. It will be held in place with the use of a clamp bolt which should be secured onto the vehicle tightly. By using a wrench, you need to attempt to remove the clamp bolt while you are holding the filtering device firmly with the other hand. Once you have detached it, remove the entire device from area of the lorry.

Attach your new device in the old one's place the same way as you removed the old one. Make absolutely certain that you position it in the correct way, so that the petrol flow points are pointed in the direction of the vehicle's engine. Once you are sure of this, you must use the wrench to fasten the fuel nut and clamp bolt securely, making sure no movement is possible. Re-install the fuel pump, reconnect the quick fittings and the black negative cable before starting the engine again and letting it run.

Before you replace the fuel filter on your pickup truck, you should ensure that the filtering replacement is exactly the right match for your vehicle's make and model. Make sure of this before reinstalling the device. If you would like to be completely certain that you have the correct type of replacement, you might want to take the old filter with you before making a purchase in order to compare the two. It is crucial that you continue to carry out this process of replacement at least once a year in order to ensure your truck's engine runs and operates to its maximum. Make sure that throughout the procedure you stay safe, by keeping a distance from sparks and flames.

4 Factors to Consider When Replacing Factory Exhaust Tips

By: Stella K.w

Factory exhaust tips are usually one of those exhaust accessories that you want to yank out the moment you leave the shop with your new car.

One, they lack quality and succumb to rust as soon as they hit the road. Two, they are usually not designed for performance or quality sound and three; they rarely reflect your taste and style. For whatever reason, you have found it necessary to replace you tips but have found that it is not as easy as you thought. Here are a few factors to consider for that quality customized finish you desire.

Size

When choosing the size, you will need to be keen on two components. These are the diameter and length. The diameter of the inlet is the most important because it must fit perfectly onto your tailpipe. Tips come in various sizes depending on the type of your vehicle. For example, trucks and SUVs will usually have larger tips as compared to smaller cars. This is also true for different makes of vehicles so be keen when you order.

When considering length, you must choose something that is not too long to pose a risk to pedestrians or too short to vent the exhaust gases properly. Choose a length that will be functional and also look good.

Material

When customizing your exhaust tips, you will also need to consider the type of material you want. There are two materials in the market depending on what you want. Chrome tips are made of mild steel and provide a great short-term look at a lower cost. On the contrary, if you are looking for durability, stainless steel tips are the thing for you. Shops such as MagnaFlow sell them at affordable prices.

Design

If you are in the market for something that reflects your individuality, then this is your section. There are so many designs out in the market depending on shape (round, square, oval) and angle (turn down, wall-angle). There are also single walled and dual- walled tips. In such variety, you cannot lack something that gives your vehicle that personal tweak.

Clamps or welding?

Exhaust tips are either clamped or welded into place. Your choice depends on the money in your pocket or the style you desire. Clamping gives you the advantage of customization; you can install and remove them whenever you please. The disadvantage is that they may become lose due to vibrations and it may be tedious to keep tightening them.

Welding on the other hand gives you the tightest seal but will not be as flexible in terms of installation and removal and may cost you much more if you need to change you tips again. In this wealth of variety however, there must be something that will give your exhaust that personal tweak you are looking for.

Shops such as flowmaster and Magnaflow will provide a one stop shop for all your exhaust tip needs. You will also get more expert advice that the article may not have touched on. Changing exhaust tips has never been easier, go ahead and try it.

There are several ways you can get a jump on this experience by taking various high school auto mechanic shop programs or by working in a repair shop for a few years. A general understanding of cars and learning basic methods will certainly benefit you in the long run, where you are able to take those lessons and expand upon them while attempting to specialize in a specific area of automotive repair.

Some benefits of working as a mechanic for more expensive vehicles such as Mercedes Benz include being able to expect a more significant salary as well as better chances at job security since developing these specialized skills are not easily attained or accomplished by most technicians. Besides the obvious benefits, some appreciate the allure of being able to be their own boss and maybe hope to open up their own shops in the future where they can emphasize their specialties in repair and decide which models and makes of cars they’ll focus on.

When considering any classes or training, do some research and decide where you would like to focus and what is the best way to go about your training. Ask mechanics you might know for advice or recommendations as far as your education is concerned and they will likely offer some helpful tips to make the experience much more fulfilling. Be reasonable when it pertains to the time needed to refine your craft as it will not happen overnight, however the benefits of becoming a certified mechanic will be well worth the while in the end.

You will be pleased with the final results whenever you hire GoECM.com to help you with your TCM, PCM and ECM repair, since they have professional experience that spans more than 10 years. Drop by http://www.goecm.com/ to learn more specifics about GoECM.Com.

Tips For Finding a Great Mechanic

By: Thomas Chiaruttini

The economy, did you hear? It is not so good these days. That is all we hear about on the news anymore.
Personally, I keep my television set tuned to the Discovery or History channel when I watch TV and stay away from the popular news channels. I know my 401K has been losing ground, I can see it in my quarterly report and I do not have to be reminded of it every 30 seconds.

It seems "news only" channels thrive entirely on bad news. Scaring the dickens out of us gets them the best ratings. At any rate, I will keep funding my retirement account every other week. After all, stocks are on sale these days and history shows that eventually the market will recover.

In the past many of you may have traded in your vehicle every three years or so. Modern vehicles today experience very few problems in the first three years. Should a problem arise, warranty coverage would most likely be in effect. Going to the dealer for service may have been routine and somewhat affordable. Many dealers offer lifetime oil changes when you purchase a new vehicle or even a used one. This is a great deal as long as you can resist the up-sell for other services that they will charge up to triple the fair rate.

Due to the current economic times, this may be the year to keep your car instead of trading it in on a new one. At this point, you have two choices, keep taking your car to the dealer for service and pay three times the labor and parts cost of an independent repair shop, or find one of those independent shops to work on your car when repairs and maintenance are necessary.

Finding a reputable repair shop may be a little bit of trial and error. Word of mouth may be the best way to start. Ask your friends, co-workers or relatives what automotive shop they use to work on their vehicle. Also, ask if they had to go back to the shop repeatedly for the same problem at any time. Do not wait until you break down on the side of the road to start your search for the right mechanic. When you do get a recommendation from someone, go there to get an oil change. Why oil change? Well, if they cannot get that right you will not want them doing anything major on your car.

Unbelievably, in my search for the right shop three out of four shops overfilled the engine with oil by as much as two quarts. That is almost as bad as driving with to little oil in the engine.

Once you get a recommendation, if possible stop in to make an appointment. This way you can look around a little. The shop bays should be somewhat clean and uncluttered. Look to see how the employees are working, if one of them is sitting on a chair scratching his belly while the other is cussing and throwing wrenches around, it may be a sign to check out another place. If all looks good, go inside to make the appointment. The owner or service writer should greet you in a reasonable amount of time. They should be pleasant and really listen to what you want them to do. If he acts as if they are doing you, a favor or you just ruined his whole day by showing up, leave. Do not be scared, you are not committed to them at all and your car still runs, and that is why you start your search with routine maintenance.

Lastly, listen to your gut! You know that feeling, that uncomfortable feeling, that you are about to be taken for every penny you can muster. If you get that gut feeling, walk away.

Remember, this may cost more than the 18.95 you see advertised in the paper and other places. That price is just to get you in the door with the hopes of an up-sell later. No one makes a profit at 18.95. They probably lose money. But with one spark plug and wire change at the dealer at say 400.00 to 600.00, that makes up for a lot of oil changes! When your car is finished, as soon as possible check your oil. It should be at the full mark on the dipstick and the oil should be a golden clear color. If the oil is over or under the full mark by more than a 1/8 inch call them back and let them know. If they are rude, or get aggravated, start your search for another shop. If they are apologetic and offer to make it right, let them. Hey, stuff happens.

Give them another shot next time.

Always check a shops work. Become familiar with what your car looks like under the hood. More times than not I have had work done and had to put many things back together myself. Even at the dealer! The shop I currently use, I asked the owner if he had any good mechanics. He was honest and said he has two good ones and the other two were not so good. I said ok, so only the good ones will work on my car, right? He said that is right. I told him I really do not like putting my car back together after a repair job. He personally checks the work out before I pick my vehicles up.

Because he knows, I certainly will!

When you do find a good shop, hang on for dear life. Good mechanics and shops are hard to come by these days. Good mechanics seem to have a sixth sense when it comes to diagnosing problems with new vehicles. Especially with those pesky check engine lights. Sometimes it may take several trips to find exactly what the true cause is even with the most sophisticated diagnostic equipment available today.

I hope this article will help you save a few bucks by finding a good independent repair shop rather than going to the dealer and paying overly inflated labor and parts cost.

Solar Battery Trickle Charger

By: Anthony Fox

A solar battery trickle charger will make you sing, "Here comes the Sun!" with even more gusto - Because it will be charging your vehicle's battery.

When you get your solar battery trickle charger you'll want to get the most out of it so set the panel in such a way that it gets the maximum exposure to the sun. Then plug the 5-watt trickle charger into your vehicle's 12-volt lighter socket and your battery will begin charging.

There are also alligator clips included that can be attached directly to the battery for situations where there isn't a lighter socket or you want to keep the socket free for charging a cell phone or other device.

This piece of equipment has numerous applications; all terrain vehicles (ATV), boats, tractors, electric fences, telemetry, recreational vehicles (RV), and more. It will even work on cloudy days. It's great when a clean and silent charging of electric or electronic devices would be beneficial, say outdoors, where you don't want to disturb the natural environment.

The most popular model today is the Sunforce 50022. It is of hardy construction with amorphous solar cells, and made of durable ABS plastic. It weighs in at a mere 4 pounds and measures 14 x 0.75 x 13 inches making it easily portable and simple to set up. With a temperature range of -40 to 176-degrees Fahrenheit it is an all season, all climate solution to your battery charging needs. With up to 5-Watts or 350mA of power to prevent the natural voltage drain of batteries over time it will keep your batteries fresh for use when you need them. And it has flexible connection options in that it includes both alligator clips and a lighter socket adapter.

The Sunforce model is compact and easy to install and it lets you harness the power of the sun, the most powerful and plentiful source of energy available to us. Unlike nuclear and fossil fuels, solar power is clean and pollution-free, and the equipment requires very little maintenance to operate.

This trickle charger is designed to stave off the natural voltage drain that 12-Volt batteries undergo over time. It can also maintain the charge of a 12-Volt battery while it is providing energy to small electronics like cell phone chargers or small pumps and motors. The Sunforce 50022 5-Watt Solar Battery Trickle Charger is constructed with durable ABS plastic and features amorphous solar cells and an ultra-bright blue LED charging indicator.

Four mounting holes are pre-cut in the frame for easy permanent installation. It is weatherproof and remains effective even on cloudy days. The built-in overcharge/discharge protection prevents overcharging and reverse-current drain. This trickle charger is an ideal choice for automobiles, recreational vehicles, all-terrain vehicles, tractors, boats and more.

Sunforce amorphous solar panels require virtually no maintenance and are weatherproof and suitable for outdoor use. It is safe to leave connected for extended periods without damage to electrical components.

For moving vehicles the solar trickle charger can and should be permanently mounted to prevent damage to the solar panels, batteries and other equipment. Otherwise it is easily removed and stored.

Solar cells convert sunlight into an electric current; they do not actually store power. The Sunforce 50022 is designed to maintain an existing battery charge, and not to fully recharge a battery.

Motorcycle Battery Trickle Charger

By: Anthony Fox

A motorcycle battery trickle charger is an important accessory for any motorcyclist.

Car battery chargers are commonly owned items by people who own cars - they're portable, inexpensive, and simple to use. But for people who ride motorcycles, this equipment is often overlooked, though it certainly shouldn't be.

There are listed here several good reasons why it's important for any biker to own a trickle charger and why it should be on your shopping list.

Motorcycle batteries lose their charge relatively quickly being much smaller than car batteries. With the common wet cell battery it is necessary to top them off with distilled water more often.

Quite often motorcycle batteries may require a booster charge to bring them up to the correct voltage when doing regular maintenance. A trickle charger can keep the motorcycle battery continually at the optimal charge, and rather than having to wait overnight for the battery to charge you can quickly be on the road.

Motorcycle batteries are more susceptible to losing their charge due to cold weather due to being exposed to the elements much more than car batteries. Motorcycle battery trickle chargers are designed to restore and maintain an optimal charge to a battery that has been in cold conditions, enabling it to be started quickly.

The battery trickle charger for a bike is compact, taking up very little room wherever you store your bike. In the course of servicing the bike for the next ride, detaching the battery and doing a full check your battery is ready for action. A fully charged battery means that you can get out and enjoy a good ride without having the frustration of a bike that won't start because the battery is dead.

Not only can a charger help keep your bike ready for when you want to ride but a battery run flat repeatedly can actually damage the internal plates that are vital to the battery's structure.

Motorcycle batteries are costly and this can be very expensive. This is preventative maintenance that will quickly pay for itself. By keeping your battery properly maintained it will be much, much longer before it has to be disposed of which is good for the environment.

Batteries on bikes get put through a considerable amount of abuse, weak charging systems, heat, vibration, power-draining accessories. A charger will increase the lifespan of the battery by keeping it well charged and in a better state. For the all-weather rider, accessories such as fog lights, heated grips and stereo systems can quickly drain the small motorcycle battery.

Attaching a trickle charger when the bike has been parked will keep the battery level correct, so the bike is ready to go when you next start it up.

Whether you're serious about motorcycle riding or just a fair weather warrior who only takes out the bike nice days, the motorcycle battery trickle charger really is a necessity. Just like oil, fuel, and tires, the battery is a vital part of your bikes operation.

Looking for a quality battery trickle charger!? We know our stuff at AutoBatteryTrickleCharger.net and we have the best quality and prices for car, motorcycle, and marine battery trickle chargers. Both conventional trickle chargers and solar powered!

Mercedes and BMW Service

By: Carmine Cupani

In the automobile industry, BMW and Mercedes are often recognized as the leaders in performance and luxury, and are some of the best known names in the world. While known for their power and comfort, they are also noted for their relatively high price tags and extensive maintenance requirements. After all, these aren’t just any ordinary machines, but precision vehicles built with precision parts.

The modern incarnations of BMW and Mercedes boast both power and comfort, but it takes dedicated and experienced technicians to keep these vehicles in proper working order. Service centers are a dime a dozen, just about on every main street and around many corners you have probably spotted one. But before you dive in head first, you need to be certain that your vehicle is given the treatment it deserves. The fact of the matter is, most of these shops are not even worth considering and are not qualified to perform maintenance and repairs on any European import vehicles.

As the driver of a special breed of vehicle, you require the expertise of factory-trained, experienced and certified technicians to look after it. Some shops will try to lure you in with very cheap services and deals that sound almost too good to be true, which they likely are. In the service industry, particularly with European imports, in many respects you get what you pay for, and while legitimately capable shops sometimes cost more, the level of service they provide is well worth it.

Transparency with the customer is also a vital aspect to building a lasting relationship. Many shops will sometimes sneak in hidden charges that are not explicitly listed on the receipt. If your service shop is not thoroughly reviewing the options with you and requesting approval before performing any task, it might be time to look elsewhere for proper service. Also, any facility that does not guarantee their work or provide a warranty can not be trusted for their parts or service.

Carmine Cupani is the owner of Carmine's Import Service, specializing in European import vehicle maintenance, including Mercedes Service and BMW Service in Kernersville, NC.

How to Maintain Your Vehicle Tires

By: Elmer Kit

It's important to maintain your vehicles tire regularly. Proper tire maintenance will ensure your tires wear properly and last as long as they are supposed to. Additionally, you should maintain your tires so that they perform as safely as possible and your car can handle the road well.

Here are some tips and tricks on how to ensure your tire maintained well.

Checking the tire pressure with a tire pressure gauge at least every month or more often when it's cold outside. On average, tires lose around 1 psi(pound per square inch) every month and 1 psi every time the temperature drops 10 degrees F. It's important to maintain proper tire pressure.

Fill up underinflated tires to their recommended psi rating. You can typically find the recommended psi for your tires on your car’s vehicle information sheet attached to the panel of the driver's side door or on the tires themselves. You can use the public air compressor at any gas station for a nominal fee or you can also fill up your tire with nitrogen for better performance.

Make sure rotate your tires every 5,000 to 8,000 miles. Rotating tires ensures that they wear evenly and prolongs the life of your tires. When you don't rotate your tires, you run the risk of having one tire that wears more significantly than the others and that has to be replaced sooner.

Inspect the tread on your tires for wear regularly. If you become familiar with what your tread looks like, it will be that much easier for you to identify when the tread is worn down. When you can see the tread bars that run across the tires, it's time to have your tires replaced.

Regularly check the depth of the tread with a penny. Hold the body of Lincoln on the penny and insert his head into the tread groove. If the head is hidden by part of the groove, the tread is within acceptable legal limits.

Try to listen to your car for irregular noises, particularly at speeds in excess of 50 mph. If your car is making noises when in motion, it could be a sign of irregular wear or other problems with your tires. Have a professional check this problem.

We hope that this article would be helpful to all car owners and enthusiast.

Keeping Tabs On Your 'Liquid Gold'

By: Martyn Gent

WITH fuel prices resuming their relentless upward trend, ways of combating theft by ever more resourceful opportunists are sharply back in focus.

Bulk diesel prices are up by an average of 10 per cent already this year and now represent an estimated 45 per cent of commercial vehicle running costs.

So, to thieves and fiddlers large stocks of fuel are an attractive target. Probably every UK family possesses at least one diesel powered car or van so the opportunities for "black market" activities are huge!

The people who steal fuel are relentless; they will cut pipework, drill holes in tanks or do whatever is necessary to get their hands on the fuel. Once they have taken what they need (or can carry) they disappear, often leaving the contents of an aboveground tank to drain from the pipework they have cut or from the hole they have drilled – these people have scant regard for the environment, and leave the unfortunate fleet operator to explain the resulting pollution to the Environment Agency

Other threats come from less aggressive thieves, we all like to think our employees are honest and trustworthy, however the price of fuel and proliferation of Diesel powered cars provides the obvious temptation.

For companies who hold fuel stocks the need to protect their major "liquid gold" assets is now more pressing than ever. Nowadays it takes more than a padlock and chain to keep the more determined thief at bay.

Physical deterrents such as high fences, barriers, restricted access to fuelling areas and advanced surveillance using security cameras all play their part. Indeed, one Cameron Forecourt customer recently went for a belt and braces approach and asked us to install a brand new system inside a ring of steel in the form of a sea container! This also has the added benefit of disguising the fact that fuel is stored on site at all.

It's at the point of storage and dispensing that more subtle security can be employed using the latest developments in fuelling technology. Bunded or double-skinned tanks with discreet and protected pipework make it that much harder for thieves. One thing we do know about these people is that they are not keen on hard work and will soon be off in search of an easier goal if things begin to get difficult.

Other deterrents include pressure regulating and anti-syphon valves which can sense and stem any unauthorised fuel flow in the pipework. Not only do these valves provide security against theft but also give added environmental protection by arresting the flow of fuel, therefore preventing pollution.

With fuel at its current high price it is essential to efficiently and accurately monitor the level of fuel in the tanks and many installations now incorporate advanced electronic tank gauging. These extremely accurate "electronic dipsticks" not only sense fuel being drawn but also maintain an accurate record of the amount of fuel delivered by your supplier. Obviously if you know exactly how much fuel goes into a tank and are recording fuel usage it makes it easier to detect deficiencies, and catch the person who might see fit to award themselves a regular "unofficial bonus".

On its own electronic gauging is an extremely useful tool for keeping a magic eye on your stocks, but by integrating it with a computerised fuel management system, you can add a totally new dimension to create an omniscient ally in the battle against theft.

Fuel Management systems traditionally provide data including fuel usage, mileage returns, driver performance and fuel costs. By integrating an electronic gauging system with a sophisticated management system such as Cameron's Eclipse or Nova web-based system enhanced round the clock security can be provided by recognising vehicle fuelling activities outside of normal working hours, loss by sudden leakage, or use by unauthorised personnel. Once a problem has been detected, the system is programmed to raise the alarm by sending a responsible person an email or SMS text message.

This, of course, provides a valuable early warning to alert on-site security or the police – a stitch in time could save you an awful lot.

There is not a "silver bullet" available to immediately safeguard your fuel storage installation against theft, but there are many measures which can be taken to make it that much more difficult for thieves to help themselves to your valuable assets. Cameron Forecourt has in excess of 30 years experience in providing a complete turnkey package of services embracing the supply, installation and maintenance of fuel tank, pumps and their associated control and gauging systems. If you think you have a security issue with your fuel installation please give us a call.

Checking Tires Can Indicate Wheel Alignments

By: Jeremy Smith

A wheel alignment can affect the suspension, steering, and tire wear on a vehicle, especially in Chesapeake, Virginia. It is important that the alignment is checked on the vehicle to prolong the tire life and protect the other parts on an automobile. Some vehicles only allow for adjustments to be made to the front tires only. An easy way to check if the automobile needs an alignment is the wear on the tire treads. The tires should be properly inflated. There are three terms used in auto alignments, camber, caster, and toe in or out.

The term camber describes the angle of the wheel and is measured in degrees. Inspect the wheel to see if the top of the tire is leaning out from the center of the vehicle. This would be referred to as positive. A negative camber would be leaning in from the center of the vehicle. Having a positive or negative camber would cause wear on one side of the tread of the tire. When driving the vehicle and it pulls to one side or the other that could indicate that the camber is different on each side of the automobile. In this case, it needs to be taken to a shop for auto repair in Chesapeake.

Caster is measured in degrees and is the angel of the steering pivot. If the car’s pivot is leaning toward the rear, it is positive. If it is leaning toward the front, it is negative. The caster can cause problems with steering the vehicle and usually does not affect the wear on the tires. If the caster is off, the owner should take it to a shop specializing in car repair in Chesapeake.

A toe in or toe out is referring to the difference between the rear and the front of the tires. It is measured in a fraction of an inch and is normally set to zero. Toe in means the front of the tires are closer to each other than the rear of the tires and toe out would be that the rear of the tires are closer to each other. Toe in or out can cause significant tire wear and should be adjusted to avoid this problem.

Other factors can cause tires to wear unevenly and steering to become difficult. It is important to check the front end and suspension for wear and tear. It is also important to have the tires rotated and balanced for even tire wear. One can visually inspect the tires to see if an auto alignment is necessary, but only a trained professional will have the tools to perform the alignment. This can be done at a shop for auto repair in Chesapeake.

Going Slow on the Snow – Put Snow Chains on Your Commercial Truck!

By: Christopher Hunter

While most people curl under their bed covers during the snowy winter months, drivers of dump trucks see this kind of weather as a great opportunity to make good money. It needs to be noted that trekking snowy and/or icy roads in a huge commercial vehicle with tons of weight doesn't just require superb driving skills; it requires the right equipment to get proper traction on the road as well. To accomplish that, a set of snow chains is not only needed but required to even proceed onto certain roads, especially in the mountainous states.

Snow chains are specialized pieces of steel equipment that are wrapped and secured around the tires to keep them from loosing grip when driving on snow-covered highways. The size varies depending on the size of the wheel. Laws and statutes also vary from state to state, both as to the number of chains allowed as well as if they are mandatory to travel over certain highways. So before buying, always check the laws and statutes of the states being traversed.

One of the most challenging parts of using this piece of snow gear is actually installing it around the tire, particularly when you are installing them in freezing weather conditions. The method for installing these devices actually varies depending upon the brand; but there are some aspects that are common to all vehicles and tires. Following is a list of steps on how to make a proper installation for snow travel on your dump trucks.

Park the truck – Before you start on the installation, it is important to find a parking area where you can safely install the chains. Since you will be working beside and with the wheel itself, parking your truck on a roadside isn't the first choice. If there is no other conceivable place for installation purposes, make sure the vehicle is well off the side of the road on an improved shoulder. Wear a safety vest and have a spotter stationed to watch for oncoming traffic.

Spread It Out - First and foremost, spread the snow chain beside the tire where it is going to be installed and untangle it. This is also a good time to check for any possible damage to the device and to determine the right side of it. A manual should help you make a proper determination since they come in different brands as well as designs. The general concept is to keep the sharp ends and connections facing away from the tire wall to prevent those ends from damaging the tire.

Drape Over the Tire – Once you have the right side and the right direction of the device determined, the next step is to drape it over the wheel.

Some of these will require you to back-up on it and pull the rest of it over the wheel. Again, it depends on the type you have selected.

Lock-up and Tighten- After the snow chain is draped over the tire, the next step is to connect the hooks starting on the inner wall of the tire followed by the outside wall. Tighten the cambers of the device to get rid of slack. Make some final adjustments and make sure that it fits snugly onto the tire. Lastly, attach rubber straps forming an 'X' across the side wall of the tire to secure it and keep it from loosening.

Inspect - Now that the chain is installed on the tire, the next step is to drive it for a mile. Then stop and make a quick inspection and perform any necessary adjustments. Inspect it at regular intervals to make sure that it is secured well. Remember to keep your speed as recommended by the manufacturer to prevent breaking the equipment.

That completes the process of how to put snow chains on commercial vehicle tires. Best wishes for the snowy months and keep those dump trucks moving!

Lubricants: A Fundamental Safeguard to Moving Parts!

By: Christopher Hunter

From the time of the earliest known civilizations, some form of lubrication was used to decrease the friction between two surfaces. Lubrication also prevents heat from developing which is the primary cause of abrasion. When abrasion exists, the parts can become unmovable which is called ‘seizure.’ Lubricants prevent two moving surfaces from touching or rubbing against each other which in turn promotes efficiency.

Today, lubricants are used in various ways depending on their purpose. We now have industrial, automotive, aviation and marine to name some of the different types. The entire lubrication process has become an indispensable part of the smooth and ongoing operation of many different pieces of equipment that are a part of our every-day life.

Composition:

Lubricants are composed of different ingredients such as base oil, base thickener, performance additives and adhesives. All of these materials are combined together in various amounts to form oil with particular consistencies and properties. Ninety percent (90%) of the product is base oil which is the building block of lubricants. This is a by-product of crude oil solvent extraction and hydro-treatment. Through the refining process, heavy hydrocarbon and other benzene-based chemicals are eliminated to become base oil which then is categorized into vegetable, synthetic and mineral.

Ten percent (10%) of the composition of lubricants is additives that are utilized to boost the base oil to make it more efficient. There are viscosity modifiers to alter its cohesiveness under increased temperature, friction modifiers to decrease the friction between two rubbing surface, anti-wear additives to hinder the direct contact between two metallic substances and metal deactivating agents to prevent the oil from oxidizing.

Important Functions:

• Protect against wear - With or without additives, this keeps moving parts from touching and decreasing wear and fatigue on the parts involved.

• Transfer heat - Particularly with liquid versions, the movement of the liquid from normally a cooler part of the engine allows it to transfer heat to that cooler section of the engine and away from where excessive heat would be detrimental to efficient operation.

• Keep moving parts separate - This is perhaps the most typical usage of a lubricant, to provide a barrier to separate moving parts.

• Prevent corrosion - With additives, this product is designed to form a chemical bond with the surface of the moving parts to prevent rust and corrosion.

• Reduce friction - When parts are kept primarily apart, the action of friction on parts is minimized which also reduces heat generated and the formation of wear particles.

• Seal for gases - The liquid displaces anything else that exists between the moving parts and in effect seals this area.

• Carry away contaminants and debris - The movement of the material through the moving parts also acts as an agent to remove any internally-created debris and external contaminants to a filter.

• Transmit power - Hydraulic fluids that are used as lubricants can also serve as the fluid in hydrostatic power transmission.

Effects to the Environment:

One of the main purposes of lubricants is to prevent direct contact between two surfaces, decrease surface friction between those surfaces and reduce the formation of debris. This action provides the benefit of promoting longer-lasting and efficient performance of the moving parts.

What about the residue that this product removes from the system? How is it eliminated and how does that action affect our environment as a whole?

Dumping - The beneficial aspects of all-purpose lubricants is what usually comes to mind, no matter whether the usage is industrial equipment or motor vehicles and we do see it described as being ‘all-purpose.’ On the other hand, the media for decades has alerted us to the inappropriate release of oils into the environment, otherwise know as ‘dumping.’ The lubrication industry is attempting to change that perception and become eco-friendly by conforming to strict regulations for the avoidance of environmental hazards with this product’s waste material.

Common Disposal Methods - Lubricants can be disposed of in at least three ways: through recycling, combustion and discharge to water, commonly to bodies of sea water. Obviously the latter has had several huge impacts on the environment in the form of oil spills. Another common environmental problem that exists is the result of improper disposal produced by tailpipe emissions. Many environmental protection guidelines exist to regulate the proper disposal of this commodity. These rules and regulations are not only implemented in the United States but all over the globe due to the negative effect to the environment.

Soot Contamination - In addition, soot contamination is an ever-present problem resulting from diesel engines as used in commercial dump trucks.

Soot is a black-colored colloidal substance that is released during combustion. This substance is released through tailpipe emissions and poses a great danger to the environment.

Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) - The good news is that soot contamination is being reduced thanks to a system called Exhaust Gas Re-circulation (EGR). The primary function of this device is to filter and reduce the level of soot contamination. It may not eradicate it completely but it will decrease soot contamination in the atmosphere

Better Filtration Systems - The bad news is that the soot is now being collected in the engine oil which is contributing to greater diesel engine wear.

Work is being done on the filtration system to try to collect a great amount of the particles being produced as the liquid passes through the filter.

Lubricants definitely provide a very beneficial contribution to the functioning of machinery in general and engine motors in particular. Over the years, engine manufacturers and oil engineers have worked to keep lubricants continually improving and the future holds even more hope for advancement in this field to keep all moving parts in motion!

Avoid Costly Commercial Truck Repairs on the Road!

By: Christopher Hunter

Truck breakdowns happen anytime and anywhere. No matter how carefully you work to prevent this type of occurrence, it does happen. You just don’t know when or where it will happen to you! This in turn creates a burden to get back on the road as quickly as possible. You have to make a rapid decision between calling a towing service to take you to a facility to have the repairs completed or fixing it by yourself. If you are planning to do it on your own, you must have sufficient technical and mechanical knowledge as well as proper training in order to diagnose and fix the problem.

Using a commercial vehicle mechanic is undoubtedly expensive. It could cost you approximately $80 to $150 an hour for these specific services. If you are going to call a towing service and ask them to repair your vehicle, you could spend nearly $1,000. This is a costly decision you need to make.

Common truck problems encountered while out on the road can easily be handled another way. These common difficulties can be prevented by setting effective preventive maintenance controls in place. You need to act ahead of time before trouble happens!

Common Truck Problems and Their Preventive Measures

There are several truck troubles that can be readily identified and repaired by the driver before a costly breakdown. Below are common items to look at and the precautionary measures to be taken to avoid costly breakdowns:

1. Battery (dead or weak) - The most common breakdown difficulty is a dead or weak battery. Common causes of this type of problem are the battery clamps, lack of charge, or insufficient battery fluid. Batteries should be checked on a regular basis, certainly before heading out on the road.

Make sure that the batteries are fully charged before heading for an extended trip. You can check, clean and inspect the battery terminals and connections as well as their polarity. Bring battery jumper cables to have on hand in the vehicle and make sure that they are well insulated. Make sure that the terminals are kept clean. Check the amount of battery fluid and take it to a battery expert for more fluid to avoid battery overheating and explosion.

2. Tires (flat or blowouts) - The next common problem to cause truck breakdowns while on the road are flat or blown-out tires. Check your tire pressure immediately before you travel. It is important that they have the correct pressure appropriate to the different speeds and the load capacity of your vehicle. You can check the manufacturer’s manual for the tire pressure necessary for your vehicle. It is just about impossible for the driver of an 18-wheeler to change a flat tire and it is usually expressly forbidden by a trucking company due to the many hazards involved. Avoiding a flat or blow-out is the only feasible solution.

3. Fuel (empty) - This truck breakdown problem is so very predictable that it is the proverbial ‘no-brainer!’ Make sure that your vehicle has enough fuel before you leave. Monitor your fuel status as you are driving paying particular attention to the roadway signs that tell you it is 125 miles or so to the next gas station! Of course, make sure that you have the right kind of fuel for your vehicle and that it is available at the station where you stop. Not every gas station on the highways has diesel fuel available.

4. Motor Oil - Oil should always be maintained at a recommended level. Check your oil level frequently and certainly before heading out on the road to ensure that you are complying with the level advised by the manufacturer.

5. Alternators - A properly functioning alternator is essential in the performance of your truck’s engine. Make sure that you check your alternator for any potential problems. Be aware of what your vehicle is trying to tell you; batteries that are continually run-down and require jumping may be a signal of a faulty alternator. Complete stalling is also another sign of an alternator going bad. The alternator can be changed out in the shop before getting out on the road much more easily than in the middle of a deserted highway!

The wise thing to do to prevent breakdowns is to get your truck on a regular preventive maintenance schedule. Potential concerns can be detected while they can still be easily handled. The alternative is going to be much more costly both in terms of repairs on the road and lost productivity.

Make an intelligent choice and stop problems before they happen!

Fuel Injection Systems Melbourne | Dyno Tuning Melbourne

By: Robbie Mcqueen

Dyno Tuning Melbourne - Superchargers

The difference between centrifugal and positive displacement blowers, is that basically a centrifugal is similar to a turbo charger. It doesn't rely on exhaust to push it around, but it relies on the engine RPM to spin it up.

The more you spin it up, the more boost you get.

Generally you find a centrifugal supercharger mounted off the side of an engine. They're generally made to be mounted on the side of engines, away from the top of the manifold. One of the advantages to a centrifugal blower (over a positive displacement blower), is that you can mount an intercooler fairly easily, so you can get more performance out of it.

The other advantage is that generally they are a lot quieter than a positive displacement blower. And, placement of them is fairly easy. You can place them above, below, in front, behind. So, there are many places they can go, so long as they line up with whatever is driving them.

Positive displacement superchargers generally have to go on top of the motor, or at least on top of the intake manifold. So, fitting an intercooler can still be done, but it is often more difficult than when fitting an intercooler to a centrifugal supercharger. There is a lot more engineering and pipework needed to fit up an intercooler to this type of supercharger.

The main positive for a positive displacement supercharger is that the minute you crack the throttle you have boost, where with a centrifugal one, often you have to build up the revs before you start seeing boost, and you often won't see boost straight away.

There are two main types of positive displacement superchargers. There is the roots type, and the screw type. Generally you find the roots superchargers to be more noisy, and less efficient unless you put some type of intercooler on it.

The screw type, positive displacement, they are very good, but they are generally a long unit, so room has to be allocated for it.

Windshield Chip Repair – Preventing Cracks

By: Bruce Dedona

Most auto owners make a point to try and do what’s best for their vehicle – regular oil changes, new coolant, the occasional transmission service etc. When the car manifests signs of problems, the driver would usually make sure it is corrected immediately to avoid more costly repairs later.

However there is one particular component that is neglected by many drivers – the windshield. Although the windshield seems to serve only a superficial role, its importance in regard to safety should not be underestimated. Just like any serious engine problem, a chipped, cracked or damaged windshield should be repaired or replaced immediately.

Many people doubt the value of chip repair. Paying to repair a chip barely the size of a small coin seems unreasonable, however the windshield is very susceptible to internal stress, and a small chip can easily become a large crack. It may appear solid enough, even with a small chip, but the windshield’s condition can deteriorate rather quickly, and in an accident even the smallest area of weakness can result in structural failure.

To better understand the problem, lets go over the basics.

Windshield glass is a type of laminated glass, consisting of two layers of special composite glass with a laminate in between the layers. The laminate usually is made from a form of vinyl plastic. The laminate acts as a sticking board for the inner and outer layer of glass, which holds both layers together and provides a surface in the event of shattering for glass fragments to adhere to. A black frame around 2 to 3 inches in width, called the ‘frit’, lines the outer edges of the windshield. The frit protects the urethane molding (the substance that bonds the windshield to the vehicle) from the sun’s ultraviolet rays. Without the frit, the urethane molding would melt with exposure to heat and become ineffective in securing the windshield to the frame.

An improperly installed or cracked windshield will jeopardize the safety of any occupants in the vehicle, particularly the driver and passenger. In an accident a chip or crack serves as a catalyst for increased damage. Compression stress will extend the crack across the windshield, where it will normally break. A windshield that has been weakened by a chip or crack can also reduce the effectiveness of your SRS airbag system. During airbag deployment, the windshield prevents the airbag from expanding upward, and directs it toward the occupant. Should the windshield break or collapse in an accident, the airbag will not deploy correctly and may increase the risk of more severe injuries.

So, you may be asking, what can I do about a chip in my windshield? The good news is that in most cases a replacement windshield is not necessary. Depending on the size and location of the chip, many can be repaired in-place. Larger cracks normally require replacing the entire windshield. The obvious alternative is to get chips fixed before they lead to a more severe problem. In most cases, a crack is the result of a small chip left untreated. Each time you stop for fuel, make sure to examine your windshield for any signs of damage. The edges of the windshield, along the frit, are most effected by driving stress, so if you notice a chip along the edge, it is important to have it immediately repaired before it cracks out.

How does a van hire benefit you

By: Ran Juse

Often, it is when you are moving to a new building that you would realize that intentionally or not you have stored quite a lot of items during your period of stay in your old building. And to make it worse, most of them would be too precious to be left behind or gifted by your loved ones which again make them priceless. And then you find out that your car is actually inadequate to move all these items at one go. What other option do you have but to search for a conveyance that can move all of them on a single trip without going back and forth collecting the remaining items? A van hire can solve these problems very easily.

Hiring a van has several benefits that you might not find with any other vehicles. Apart from the obvious benefit of carrying a lot more baggage than what could be contained in your car, vans are easier to manage than the large trucks and less expensive as well. They come in different sizes ranging from the small ones in which you can carry your wardrobe items to the big ones wherein you could take your whole furniture.

Vans are not as expensive as you imagine them to be, at least not at all as expensive as a truck. With a little extra than what it would require for a car, which anyway you would have to drive a multiple number of times to move all the items to the new place, you can hire a van very easily.

Moreover, for driving a van of any size all you need is your regular driving license.

Hiring a van is now is not at all difficult as it was before. You’ll find plenty of providers that offer van hire at very affordable prices. If you search online there are many websites that offer van hire services. Quality companies would also provide a fire and theft insurance that lets you drive peacefully without any anxieties. This way even if you had the misfortune of facing an accident you have no financial worries.

Most of the van hire companies now bring the vehicle at your place from which you can take it ahead. Once you finish your task you can let them know and they’ll come and pick it up. Isn’t it convenient and easy? An ideal van hire would bring you a vehicle of high performance at less expense and more storage space.

Knowing the Right Lift Kits for your Jeep

By: Karl Cruz

If you want to purchase jeep accessories like lift kits, it is a must to understand first what these lift kits are. A lift kit is basically a vehicle modification tool that is used to lift the suspension of your vehicle.

Installing them into your jeep will make the wheel wells higher to allow you to install large and durable tires. Nowadays, there are two kinds of lift kits available in the market: the body lift kits and the suspension lift kits. Each of this kind has their own advantage and disadvantage.

If you have a limited budget but you want to customize your jeep, body lift kits is the best that you can consider. This kind of lift kit is inexpensive and usually made up of blocks and spacers. Off-road drivers do not usually prefer this kind of lift kit since it does not change or improve the suspension capability of the car or increase travel rate. What a body lift kit only does is to increase the wheel wells so you can use bigger tires.

Aside from allowing you to install more aggressive beefy tires, body lift kits are used to improve the ground clearance of your jeep. Having great ground clearance is important especially when driving off the road. Another good thing about this kind of jeep accessories is that it does not alter factory parts, thus giving you the self-assurance that the original feature of your ride is not affected in any way. There are different kinds of lifts for jeep body available on the market to cater the specific requirements and needs of the model of your jeep.

A suspension kit, on the other hand, is a jeep accessory that helps a lot in improving the clearance between the axle and ground for a greater travel rate. By replacing the front and rear leaf springs and shocks of your ride, the suspension lift kit can raise the suspension of your jeep to a new height and provide a better level of performance. Depending on the type of application, a suspension system may include shock absorbers, linkages and springs.

Proper handling and maneuvering are very important during off-road driving. Suspension lift kits can help you improve these two factors for your vehicle. Also, a suspension kit is designed to enhance the ground clearance and isolate you from bumps, vibrations and road noise. For most off-road drivers, the main purpose of installing a suspension kit is to improve the suspension articulation of their rides. So, if you want to have a fun and safe driving on mud, sand and rocks, adding suspension systems on your jeep is vital.

Re-gearing is, however, one thing you need to consider when you want your Jeep lifted. Installation of a lift kit and bigger tires will require you to re-gear to account for the bigger tires. You can always check or visit the internet for the ratio charts to have an idea on what type of gearing will best suit your Jeep and especially your budget.

Better yet, visit your trusted mechanic and ask for advice on the right kinds of jeep accessories like lift kits to install in your ride. Keep in mind that the higher you lift your car, the more unstable it become on the road. So, it’s best to get expert advice when thinking of lifting your jeep.

Karl Cruz writes articles for 4WheelOnline, a trusted online auto store that offers a wide spectrum of quality truck accessories, 4x4 parts, as well as jeep accessories.

How an Engine Control Unit Affects Performance

By: Carmine Cupani

The Engine Control Unit, sometimes referred to as a PCM (Power-train Control Module), ECM (Engine Control Module), DME (Digital Motor Electronics), or DDE (Digital Diesel Electronics) is a device that manages fuel volume, ignition timing and various other elements required to keep a modern engine running. The Engine Control Unit reads values from multidimensional performance maps (e.g. Lookup tables), using input values such as engine speed which are calculated with readings from a variety of sensor devices monitoring engine activity. In the past, air/fuel mixture, ignition timing and idle speed were regulated directly by mechanical sensors and actuators, unlike today’s engines which are almost entirely computer controlled.

Air/Fuel Mixture

In engines utilizing fuel injection systems, the Engine Control Unit (ECU) determines the quantity of fuel to inject based on several different parameters. When the throttle is pressed down, the throttle body is opened allowing more air to flow into the engine, which results in the ECU reacting by injecting more fuel based upon the increased airflow. N the case of an engine which hasn’t been warmed up, the ECU will inject slightly more fuel causing the engine to run rich until it has properly warmed up.

Ignition Timing

Engines require a spark to start the combustion process within the combustion chamber. The ECU can minutely adjust the timing of the spark to optimize both power output and fuel economy, and if it detects any engine knock and decides it is a direct symptom of the ignition timing settings, it will adjust accordingly to prevent it.

Regulating Idle Speed

In the majority of engine systems, the ECU is also equipped to maintain control over idle speed. A crankshaft position sensor monitors the engine RPM, and this sensor plays a significant role in all aspects of engine timing for fuel injection, spark events and valve timing. Direct control over idle speed is handled by a programmable throttle stop or idle air bypass stepper motor. In order to be effective, the load at idle needs to be accurately anticipated for proper control. Variations in engine load such as HVAC systems, power steering, power brakes and the state of the electrical systems all have to be taken into account.

Variable Valve Timing

Engines with Variable Valve Timing are also directly controlled by the ECU, which manages the time in the engine cycle at which the valves open. At higher speeds, the valves are normally opened slightly sooner, which serves to optimize airflow into the cylinders.

The Modern ECU

Modern ECUs employ microprocessors which are capable of handling the engine’s sensor data in real time. The software aspect of the Engine Control Unit (normally referred to as firmware) in some cases is reprogrammable by using updated code or via chip replacement. The more sophisticated engine management systems govern the operation of many other systems within the vehicle, including electronically-controlled automatic transmissions, traction control systems, cruise control, anti-theft systems etc.

Depending on your vehicle’s make/model and engine type, upgrading the ECU firmware may provide an increase in both engine efficiency and power, and also fuel economy.
