Understanding Common Brake Rotor Types: Solid, Vented, Drilled and Slotted

By: Teddy Havrington

Solid and vented rotors made with gray cast iron are the most common types of rotors. Drilled and slotted rotors are a variation of the same design.

A solid brake rotor is just that - solid. There is no space between the two friction surfaces. A vented brake rotor more commonly has a space between the two friction surfaces of the rotor. This helps with cooling and is more common on the front of the vehicle because front brakes do 70-80% of the braking and endure the most heat.

Unlike slotted or drilled faced rotors, general stock replacement rotors are normally solid faced rotors that are either solid or vented. When replacing a rotor, there should be little confusion as to whether you need a vented rotor or not. If your car came with a vented brake rotor, then the replacement part will be a vented brake rotor. If the car came with a solid brake rotor, the replacement part is a solid brake rotor. No solid rotor replacements are available for a vehicle that came originally equipped with a vented rotor.

Slotted and drilled rotors are a performance modification that do not increase braking power, but might aid in the cooling of the rotors in high heat situations. There are both advantages and disadvantages to having slotted or drilled rotors. One rule of thumb is that if you are just daily driving, there is no reason to get slotted or drilled rotors other than to improve the way your rotors and wheels look. (Drilled and slotted rotors can have an aesthetic appeal to them because they may have a rust prevention measure applied to them and can be indicative of a performance braking system.) One disadvantage of drilled rotors is that they will provide more friction against your pads and reduce the life of them. Another disadvantage is the potential for a drilled brake rotor to crack when subjected to thermal stress. A drilled hole can upset the grain structure of the metal; the result is an uneven temper in the metal. As the brake rotor cools, the uneven temper can cause cracks. The most common crack seen is located from the outer most drilled hole to the edge of the brake rotor. Since the edge of the brake rotor is the first to cool, this is where the most uneven area of cooling occurs. For this reason, drilled rotors are not well suited to racing conditions in which high brake component temperatures are always occurring. Cracks cause vibrations and the larger the crack the more dangerous. The advantages are that the scrub friction of the holes and slots, while increasing the wear on your pad, reduce the chance of the pads becoming glazed.

Slotted and drilled rotors have a series of slotted channels, drilled holes, or both. These rotors primary purpose is to reduce the effects of brake fade. When the temperature is too hot for the pad and rotor to work properly together, brake fade occurs, which refers to the reduced feeling of brake power. The high temperature causes the brake pads and rotors to release a gas, thus reducing the friction that they would provide at lower temperatures. The slots and drilled holes are a means to dissipate this gas and reduce brake fade. The drilled rotors may even help cool the braking system; however, the drilled holes may encourage the temperature related fractures previously mentioned. Of course, when you are experiencing brake fade, you are punishing your rotors to the point that you could warp or crack them regardless of whether or not they are slotted or drilled.

Property Maintenance and Tenants Property Repairs

By: Alan Wulz

There are many things that are involved in property maintenance. This may include obvious things such as keeping the grass trimmed, or the property free of rubbish. It may also include keeping hedges trimmed and/or keeping flowers planted and lawns properly watered.

Many individuals do their own maintenance, but there is a subset of individuals and businesses that hire others to maintain their property for them. It really depends on what sort of things an individual’s is considering to be maintenance as to what they will need done for their particular property. Are they just considering the outdoor property to be maintained, or do they want buildings maintained as well.

Property maintenance can consist of any number of things, and there are any numbers of people that can be hired to do the work. Those who are living in flats usually have maintenance personnel who will do the work for them; however, those who are living in houses must do most of the work themselves. Some people consider property maintenance to be a joy. Other individuals may consider it to be a necessary evil however.

People may look in business directories or the yellow pages to find individuals who may do property maintenance for them. It may be difficult to find a person's with whom the individual will feel comfortable having a business arrangement with however.

Most landlords will do maintenance and property repairs for their tenants, but sometimes renters are uncomfortable with the work that the landlords do. A tenant may talk to the landlord to see if they might be able to contract with someone to do the necessary property repairs, and have the landlord pay for the repairs that are performed. Individuals unfortunately sometimes will end up in court and try to force the landlord to make the necessary property repairs.

However, getting back to those who want to do repairs themselves, there are many ways to do property maintenance. Individuals who undertake these repairs should consult DIY articles to see how to do the necessary repairs, should they choose to perform them themselves. Many repairs are not as difficult as they seem at first blush and articles about maintenance can be helpful to perform the tasks.

The advent of the internet is helpful to those who need to have their property maintained. It is easy to get information for those you can hire to maintain your property. It is also helpful to get information about specific repairs you might want to do yourself; like unclogging a drain, or glazing a bathtub.

There are many things that an individual can do to maintain their own properties, and the internet is a helpful tool for that. An individual can even get email reminders about what sort of maintenance and repairs need to be done with.

So whether an individual chooses to do it themselves, or have someone maintain the property, repairs should be able to be done without too much trouble. Property repairs are something everyone has to deal with at one time or another. It is best to make them easy, and the individuals should do what works for them.

Most landlords will do property maintenance and property repairs for their tenants, but sometimes renters are uncomfortable with the work that the landlords do. A tenant may talk to the landlord to see if they might be able to contract with someone to do the necessary property repairs

Fuel Injector Sizing Bayswater | Fuel Injection

By: Robbie Mcqueen

One of the things when selecting injectors for your car, or for your engine, is to know, what type of injector you want. One of the biggest things you need to know when selecting injectors is the o-ring size of the injector.

Some injectors come in 14mm o-ring size, and others come with 11mm o-rings. The dimension from o-ring to o-ring is a big thing.

Some injectors have 2 o-rings on them (one at each end), meaning it seals in the manifold with an o-ring, and it also seals in the fuel rail with an o-ring.

Another type of injector has an o-ring at the fuel rail end, and a buffer seal at the manifold end.

This is very important if you are going to start to run some boost, and you don't want to lose boost past where the injector sits. So, the correct placement and the correct injector is a big thing for high performance and big drivability.

There is another type of injector. It has a 14mm recess, but you can fit an 11mm o-ring to it. That may be perfect to help with the scenario of your car. This all comes back to working out what size injector you want for your engine.

You can also see there that we have different styles of connectors for different vehicles. Once again, generally you can match the injector to the car to save any kind of further cost and effort in wiring.

One of the other big issues with injectors that we come across a lot is that people go too big with their injectors. They always think that 800 or 1,000cc injectors is what you need. You can match an injector to the power rating of what the car requirements are.

This is very easily done. On average it takes 5cc of fuel injector size for every horse power the car wants to produce. This is an equation that we use quite often in the trade.

For example, if a car was to produce 400hp, we would install injectors that would supply 450hp. There is no reason to put injectors in it so it can go to 1,000hp.

It is a waist of time, and the drivability down low, at idle and fuel economy is not there.

Chesapeake Collision Repair Service Gets Boats Back On The Water

By: Jeremy Smith

Living in the Hampton Roads, Virginia area, it is important to find a reliable boat collision repair center that is centrally located. There are many waterways in the Hampton Roads area and boats routinely come in contact with things that cause damage, including trailers, other watercraft, seawalls, locks, docks and rocks. A Hampton Roads body shop is critical to getting the owner’s watercraft back in running condition and able to navigate the many rivers and tributaries in the area, and the Chesapeake Bay, Atlantic Ocean and Intracoastal Waterway.

Hull Repair The most important feature of a boat is the hull. This is what makes sure the boat will float. Without a sound hull, any boater is in trouble. The many waterways around Chesapeake and Hampton Roads have obstructed features that can damage the boat’s hull, making it questionable for seaworthiness. Dents, cracks and holes will prevent watercraft from floating and running properly. Patches and seamless repairs should be done by a professional Chesapeake collision center to ensure the boat is a seaworthy vessel.

Interior A boat’s interior can be damaged by unruly guests and passengers, harsh storms and breaches from the exterior. A qualified repair center in Chesapeake can also handle the damaged upholstery and interior structural problems. Broken instruments and steering mechanisms can also be repaired or restored.

Paint With every scrape and scratch on boats in Hampton Roads comes the likelihood that the watercraft will probably need to be repainted. A qualified Chesapeake repair shop will have professional painting booths with different types and colors of paint for the customer to choose. A well-versed collision repair service in Chesapeake will know when and how to do paintless repairs when possible.

Trailers When transporting a boat in the Hampton Roads area, keeping the trailer in top shape is also important. Flat tires and wheel repairs need to be made quickly and professionally so that the boat can be put back on the water as soon as possible. Trailer collisions can also damage a boat’s hull with dents and scratches. Repairs to the hull must be accompanied by trailer repairs to prevent a repeat performance.

Vehicles When the boat and trailer are damaged as a result of an auto accident on the road, the vehicle will likely need Chesapeake automobile repair as well. The vehicle can be fixed at the same time as the boat. Crumpled metal, alignment issues, body paint and frame repair should all be addressed by the same shop when possible to avoid the inconvenience and stress of having to take the watercraft to one place, and the vehicle to another.

Changing the Engine Oil

By: Elmer Kit

Engine oil is one of the most important fluids of the whole engine; it is like the blood that flows throughout the whole engine component. The main role of the engine oil is to lubricate all mechanical moving parts like bearings and linkage.

There are two classifications of engine oil. The first one is the mineral based oil and the other one is the synthetic or fully synthetic engine oil. There are some advantage and disadvantages of these two kinds of engine oil.

Mineral based engine oil is good for everyday use and for budget change oil maintenance. Ideally you should change your engine oil every 3 months or 5000km (whichever comes first). The advantage of using this kind of oil is that it’s affordable and you change your oil much frequent. Remember, using fresh oil will help protect your engine and preserves its condition. The disadvantage would be it is not recommended for high performance and racing engine plus you should give more time to change your oil.

Synthetic engine oil is also known as performance oil. The advantages of using this kind of oil are the following: higher break down temperature, adds more protection for the engine in extreme usage, longer change oil intervals and it adds a bit of horse power. The only disadvantage would be the cost of using this kind of motor oil. The price would be double as compared to mineral based motor oil.

Remember, you should know the viscosity recommended to be used for your vehicle. You can based it from the manual. But usually on tropical places they recommend the use of 50-40 viscosity while on places that has winter or four season climate they recommend to use 40-30 viscosity. It would be helpful for old engine to use thicker oil like 20w 50 because older engine are prone to oil leak for the seal would worn out. On the other hand modern engine would be fine using 15w 40.

Changing your oil would be very interesting to do. You can do it by yourself or just bring your vehicle to a shop and let them do the job.

Here are some steps on how to change your engine oil.

1. Jack up the front part of your vehicle. Make sure that it’s high enough for you to put a container where the use oil will be drained.

2. Look for the drain plug; it’s usually located at the lowest part of the oil pan.

3. Carefully remove the oil plug and be ready for the container, for after removing the oil plug the used oil will squirt out.

4. Don’t forget to change the oil filter. It is recommended to change it at the same time with the engine oil.

5. Give some time to fully drain the use oil.

6. Install the new oil filter and make sure not to over tight it.

7. Install back the oil plug. Never over tighten it. You don’t want to have it loose its thread.

8. Add fresh engine oil to the engine; make sure to look for the oil capacity of the engine. It should be always on the exact level.

9. Start its engine. Let it idle for a couple of minutes and don’t rev the engine.

10. Shut of the engine then check the oil level in the dip stick or sight glass. Always make sure that the level should be on the exact level. If the level is low add a bit of oil, but if over the limit you should drain some of it.

11. Lastly check for any sigh of oil leak. If there’s any, repair it at once. You wouldn’t want to run your engine without oil or else it will kill it.

We hope that this article would be very helpful to all readers and enthusiast.

Car Lift Safety Features

By: Brian Davis

There’s no one way to make a car lift or truck lift safer for the operator. Manufacturers of high-quality automotive lifting products are always looking for better, more secure lifting methods. As a result, many excellent automotive lift safety features are now offered to the consumer. Here are just a few examples of the great technological strides that reputable ALI / ETL certification partners have developed to keep you and your employees safe.

Two-post Car Lift Automatic Arm Restraints

Because the various car lifting solution designs can be extremely different from each other, it makes sense that some safety features are specific to only one kind of car lift. Two-post car lifts employ swing arm assemblies that allow the operator to change the arm configuration to suit a wide range of vehicles. It is important that swing arm lifts employ restraint devices to prevent arms from shifting or dislodging after a car or truck is already mounted and raised. Higher-quality two-post car lifts will feature this safety critical element; typically a gear mechanism that automatically secures the arms into place whenever the lift begins to rise. The automatic gear arm restraints will only disengage again when the lift is in a safe, lowered state.

Four-Post Car Lift Anti-Sway Blocks

Four-post car lifts are principally suspension lifts that rely on their columns to contain the lifting structure via cables or chains, while simultaneously bearing the load equally between them. Since the four-post car lift is not a rigid structure, it was once common for lifts to sway slightly during raising or lowering operations. Anti-sway blocks are one method of minimizing sway and maintaining proper spacing. This is especially important to ensure that safety locks are always engaged and that each post or column is holding 1/4th of the overall weight.

Four-Post Car Lift Runway Ramps and Chocks

Be sure your auto lift is equipped with manual wheel chocks as the primary means to restrain vehicles from inadvertently rolling off either end of the runways. Automatic stops on the approach end and fixed stops up front should be provided on runway lifts as a secondary means to restraint.

Hydraulic Flow Restrictor

Hydraulic car lifts that are designed with safety in mind use specialized hydraulic flow restrictors or velocity fuses integrated into the hydraulic cylinders or hydraulic circuit to control sudden, rapid decent in the event of a hydraulic component failure. These essential safety devices can dramatically reduce or stop downward travel in a free-fall situation due to a hydraulic system failure other than the cylinders themselves.

Design That Address and Eliminates Pinch Points

Pinch points are not just mere annoyances like the name might suggest. Without supervision and careful operation, pinch points can result in damaged property and injury. Reputable manufacturers employ engineers to help identify potential pinch points for hoses and limbs, and then they remove them from the design of an auto lift.

What is a Portable Alternative 2-Post Lift?

By: Brian Davis

There seems to be be a lot of questions about the new type of car lift being introduced to the market. Like with anything new, exciting and different, there are some concerned opinions flying around regarding the safety & functionality of this portable two-post garage lift. The following provides valuable information relating to the MaxJax and will hopefully dispel some of the hearsay.

Is the MaxJax really safe?

Absolutely. If you compare the number of people killed or injured annually using floor jacks or jack stands to other car lifting solutions, it's evident that the MaxJax provides increased safety when installed and operated properly.

If you've ever visited a service garage, dealership or fleet repair business, it's easy to see that two-post lifts are the lifts of choice among professionals. In fact, the Automotive Lift Institute reports that out of the thousands of car lifts sold monthly, and among the many lift configurations available, two-post style lifts represent well over 63% of the market.

Lets be clear—the MaxJax is not just a hobby lift. It too is a "real" lift. It's built by our team of qualified engineers that not only designed the MaxJax, but also our family of full-sized lifts. We've got years of experience and we've done our math. While most car enthusiasts are talking about 4-bolt mains, our engineers are studying applied force, axial force, bending moment, center of gravity, concentrated load, deflection, deformation, distributed load, ductility, elastic limit, moment, normal strain & stress, potential energy, sheer strain, strength, yield stress, yield strain and so on.

It looks like a pain to setup. Is it? Nope. We've made it as easy as possible. The motor cart is easier to roll around than a heavy suitcase; carting a roll-around patio heater around would be more difficult than moving a MaxJax column; and cleaning a windshield would take longer than connecting the MaxJax hoses. So in reality, you could have the MaxJax set-up faster than you could throw two wheels on your mother-in-law's F150, drag her suitcase from the driveway to the truck, wipe the bugs off her windshield and toss the borrowed propane heater on the truck bed. And don't forget that her truck wheels would have six lug bolts whereas the MaxJax only has five for each column.

We say it sets up in about 15 minutes just to make sure there's no chance of being wrong in our advertising. The truth is, if you're dedicated, you can probably do it in about nine. Consider that most DIY'ers spend way more time trying to get vehicles positioned on ramps or floor jacks. And then when you tack on all the non-productive time you waste slithering around with your back on the in the cramped confines beneath your car while it's on jack stands, you start to see where the MaxJax is a real time saver.

If you have to go through all the trouble to set up, why is it marketed as portable unit?

Car Lift Conclusions

By: Brian Davis

Purchasing a new car lift is no small matter. Regardless of whether you’re a shop owner or you just love working on cars in your own garage, you deserve to get more than the best car lift for you--you deserve to have a pleasant time doing it. Just by following this simple car lift guide, you’re already well on your way towards having the best auto lift buying experience possible. Here’s a quick recap.

Do your homework:

Get all the various measurements and stats you can BEFORE you start shopping around for a car lift. Knowing the dimensions of your work space, your vehicle’s weight class and what features are most important to you will keep you firmly on track.

Choose your lift type:

There are at least nine different types of car lifts out there for you to consider. Each one comes with its own unique set of benefits. It’s important to match up the lift type to your capacity needs, your work area, the type of work you perform and the vehicles you work on. Taking all these factors into consideration will make your list of optimal car lift candidates get smaller and smaller, and your choice will be much simpler.

Know you’re safe:

Car lifts and truck lifts are completely safe at any maximum rated capacity as long as they have the proper safety features, are regularly serviced, pass inspection and are operated properly. The fastest way to determine if a car lift is high-quality is to check to see if it is ALI / ETL certified.

We also gave you a list of different safety features. Compare the safety features built in to each car lift that you’re considering and you’ll know immediately which one you’ll feel the most comfortable working under.

Choosing your dealer:

By now you’ve got the what--you know exactly what kind of lift you are in the market for. Now it’s time to find out who you want to buy it from. Call around to find out what customer service is like from both the dealer and the manufacturer. Know before hand who will be handling your installation and future service. If you get a bad feeling about someone, don’t buy your car lift from them. It’s that simple.

Cost vs. Price:

Getting the best deal will be completely determined in the long run by how much time, effort and headaches you avoid. Don’t be tempted by inferior products offered at a lower price. Pay what a safe, secure, high-quality auto lift is actually worth to you. Also, check to see what is included in the price, like warranty and shipping--you might just end up with a steal of a deal anyways.

Final Tips:

  • DON’T buy used car lifts.
  • DON’T install your car lift on the edge of a concrete slab.
  • DON’T forget about overhead clearance.
  • DON’T forget about the cross bar on most two-post car lifts.
  • DON’T be afraid to negotiate.
  • DO consider upgrading your lift’s capacity for extended versatility.

We hope you have found this car lift buyer’s guide to be helpful. Go forth and lift.

Lift strong. Lift smart. Lift safe.

What is an Auto Detail (Atlanta)?

By: Tabitha Walters

I have seen quite a few ads on discount sites offering deals on auto details. When I read what the deal consists of they turn out to be glorified car washes. The thing that stymied me was that those deals sold about a thousand coupons. So I thought I would bring to the attention of my loyal public what a detail really is.

If you are old school like me, you probably think of a detail as a wash a wax and interior shampoo, the works. But technically, a detail can be as simple as a car wash. And many advertisers use that terminology because they know that when people hear the word detail, they are thinking of the works.

One deal that I saw that advertised an auto detail for $35 did not even include a hand wash. it was simply a glorified ride through the tunnel. One thing to look for is the word "hand". If wax is listed as a part of the service, you could end up getting a liquid wax sprayed on your car in the wash tunnel.

So, take time to read the services that are included in your detail and don't be afraid to ask questions about the individual services offered.

One deal I saw recently was a deal for a complete detail for only $65? It is listed on their website at $255. If that is not amazing enough, they will come to your home or place of business and do the work. I certainly scrutinized that one, but I found out that it is a legitimate full service detail.

Hand wax, interior shampoo of seats and carpets, the works. I thought I would let you all know about it. So, if you are in the Atlanta area, go to http://buyalongwithus.com and get this one.

The company's name is FleetCleaners, Inc. They are out of Lawrenceville GA and service the whole Atlanta Metro area.

The Manufacturing Superiority Of BendPak's Auto Lifts

By: Brian Davis

BendPak recognizes the manufacturing process as our moment of maximum influence. When we ship a unit, we need to know that the product that left our manufacturing complex was the best it could be. That's why we demand nothing short of the very finest in facilities and machinery. In 2006 we opened a brand new 300,000 square foot facility designed for maximum efficiency and safety, where we employ the best steel fabrication techniques in the world.

BendPak manufacturing processes are centralized to deliver cutting-edge technology and unprecedented quality control. All of our manufacturing facilities employ efficient, state-of-the-art processes to serve our customers' needs in the most cost-effective way possible. Companies that want to be competitive in an increasingly global marketplace must have a global outlook. BendPak continually seeks opportunities to strengthen our existing presence in the global arena, as well as set world-class standards in everything we do.

Our multi-department manufacturing complex has allowed us to expand machinery and employees and triple our daily production numbers. All BendPak employees are Q.C. trained and follow rigid ISO-9001 guidelines. Every day, more than 700 employees around the world dedicate themselves to putting our core values into action. Safety is first—it's our company's top priority, followed closely by environmental responsibility, cost-efficiency, quality, customer service and accountability for all departments. These principles guide our highly skilled workforce towards BendPak's unified vision.

BendPak is a true leader in both process and product technology. That's why we have three research and development facilities dedicated to advancing the boundaries of automotive service lifts and parking lift technology. Our research and development divisions are the true catalysts for innovation, providing our specialized R&D personnel with the support they need to explore design opportunities and potential avenues through which to deliver superior products to the consumer.

We are particularly proud of our intensive powder-coating process. Our powder-coat finish gives our premium lifts a high-quality, extremely durable finish which can withstand even the harshest environmental or chemical conditions. Unlike other companies that claim to powder coat, we take pride in our meticulous 10-step process. First, all parts are visually inspected before being sandblasted. Afterwards, they are washed in our 5-stage phosphate tanks that can accommodate parts up to 25' long. Once cleaned, they're immediately dried to avoid rust production, and then outgassed.

Outgassing pre-bakes the parts in a curing oven, reducing the possibility of blemishes that may be hiding in the pores of the metal. If not properly outgassed, imperfections in the metal may bubble during the curing process and most likely will cause chips in the powder. After the parts are washed and outgassed, any surfaces and / or threaded holes that need to be masked or plugged are done so with high-temperature masking tape and silicone plugs. Next, the parts are given a quick thinner wipe to remove any light debris or fingerprints before being hung on an electrostatically grounded conveyor line. Powder is finally applied using an electrostatic spray gun. The powder "sticks" to the surface in a fashion similar to how dust sticks to a television screen. Dodgy Mechanics, How can you tell Good from Bad?

By: Martin Doherty

How many car mechanic horror stories have we heard of? It seems just about every time we turn on the television we hear stories of overcharging, over servicing, charging for repairs that do not need to be done and "dodgy" workmanship. So, how can we tell a good motor mechanic from a bad motor mechanic?

After choosing either a Mobile Mechanic Service or a local Workshop, research your potential car service provider. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, a genuine and quality service provider will be more than happy to answer any query you may have.

First and foremost, is your car service provider qualified and does he or she have an Australian recognised trade certificate? Don’t be afraid to ask to see the trade certificate of the mechanic that is assigned to work on your car, not just the trade certificate of the owner. Many a workshops have one or two qualified mechanics, often the faces of the business or the business owner, and numerous apprentices who generally carry out the required work.

Mobile Mechanic and Mobile Auto Electrical services too should be scrutinised and their credentials checked. There are an abundance of these mobile car service providers, many without proper Australian recognised trade certificates. It is also well worth checking how long they have been in operation for as this industry has its fair share of "fly by night" services, here on day, gone the next. Unfortunately the lack of regulation in Australia has made it very easy for a dodgy operator to start a business, especially a mobile mechanic business. Many mechanics are under the mistaken belief that all that is required to start their own mobile mechanic business is a van and basic hand tools, forgetting about occupational health and safety matters, insurances, advertising and sophisticated and expensive electronic diagnostic equipment required to fix today’s modern vehicles.

Once you have established qualifications, check how long they have been in operation for and most importantly their insurance certificates. Does your service provider have public liability insurance? Is your car insured should an accident occur when road testing your vehicle? Should something go wrong with a repair, is the service provider covered for damage arising from faulty workmanship? After all if something does go wrong, you want to make sure you are covered and not left high and dry!

If you prefer to take your car to a workshop, again do your homework and get a feel for the motor mechanic in question. Pay attention to how busy the workshop is and what type of cars are being serviced or repaired. If all you find is old clunkers, perhaps it not a mechanic you want to take your relatively modern car to for car repair or car service.

Be wary of deals that are too good to be true and prices that are well below market average. When a deal seems too good to be true, it usually is.

It is always a good idea to stay clear from excessively cheap brake repair advertisements, "Free" Safety Inspections, cheap X Point inspections and the like. These types of deals are designed to lure potential customers through the door and then up sell often at inflated prices. Cheap brake repair advertisements commonly involve your car being fitted with cheap imported, potentially inferior quality Asian brake pads.

Finally, wether you choose a Mobile Mechanic or a Mechanical Workshop, choose a company that has at its disposal up to date electronic diagnostic tools capable of communicating with your vehicles’ onboard diagnostic systems, a motor mechanic that you are comfortable with, a mechanic who will explain car problems in a manner you can understand and a mechanic that has both his qualifications and insurances in order.

How Is Wheel Alignment A Problem in Vehicles?

By: Jeremy Smith

Driving a vehicle in Southeastern Virginia can put a lot of wear and tear on a vehicle, especially with rough roadways due to potholes and construction. Wheel alignment is a common problem in the area, and one reason people need automotive services in Chesapeake.

Wheel alignment is one of the important aspects of standard automobile maintenance and it is important for the health of the car or a truck. All of the elements that make a car go straight are together called alignment. All four wheels of a vehicle should be close to 90 degrees to the ground.

When the vehicle starts pulling to one side, it is most likely that the wheels are out of alignment. Irregular tire wear, vibration and odd handling are some other reasons.

Most people prefer to leave wheel balancing to the professionals. It is all about altering the position of the wheels as per the car maker's specifications. This is something that a Chesapeake auto body shop can do when the vehicle owner is not comfortable with doing it by themselves.

The desired result of these adjustments is to minimize tire wear, and to ensure safety by making sure that the vehicle is traveling straight and true.

Angles can also be adjusted to be beyond the maker's specifications in order to obtain a particular handling characteristic. Motorsport and off-road applications may ask for angles to be altered well beyond regular angles for a variety of reasons.

Suspension components are carefully set to be at calculated locations. Wheel alignment is a very simple and straightforward affair for Chesapeake auto shops that are comfortable and competent with alignment services. Wheel alignment normally involves three main measurements; caster, camber and toe. These three measurements have to be maintained at their manufacturer’s standards. In other words, these have to be maintained as close as they can be to the right measurement.

Most of the modern cars have adjustments for toe only, so a qualified auto mechanic will need to look at other problems. The most obvious symptom for a toe problem is a saw-tooth-like wearing on both front tires.

Wheel alignment is important for maximizing tire life and to keep a vehicle that should go straight when moving on a straight and level road. A vehicle can lose its alignment by going over bumps and through potholes and dips. Regular travel and vibration over grating or railroad tracks is also known to cause loss of alignment. Another factor is inconsistent tire pressure or improper tire mounting. Running an incompatible spare or one odd-type tire to the cars other three tires can also cause problems with alignment.

Removing Scuffs and Scratches on Your Car’s Plastic Bumpers!

By: Zac Cuares

Your car’s plastic bumpers don’t always need replacement when minor damage crop up – such as scuffs and scratches. Repairing these scuffs and scratches are not as difficult as you imagined or as complicated as fixing up scratches on sheet metal that are likely to form rust.

Save time, money and effort repairing your damaged bumper with these simple and convenient steps:

Materials Needed:
• Automotive Clear Coat
• Automotive Paint
• Automotive Primer
• Dish Soap
• Grease and Wax Remover
• Paper Towels
• Sand Paper

Step 1: Clean the scratched area with dish soap to get rid of any wax or dust particles on the surface. Use a piece of cloth enfolded around a finger to get hold of the scratches and scuffs. Wash the soap entirely and pat dry the surface using paper towels before proceeding to the next step.

Step 2: Check the intensity of the scratches and scuffs. Run your fingernail tip across the scratch and if it can hold the rut, this means that the scratch is deep, otherwise, the scratch is shallow.

Step 3: Polish the scratch with 120-grit sandpaper until it becomes smooth, even and free from tough edges. Bear in mind that plastics are softer than metal so ensure not to sand too much in one spot to avoid having a low part on the surface.

Step 4: Spray about two light coats of automotive primer on the polished spot. Wait for about 30 minutes allowing the coat of primer to dry.

Step 5: Polish the automotive primer evenly with 300-grit sandpaper until it becomes soft to touch. Swab the spot with grease and wax remover to take away oil and dust elements.

Step 6: While holding the spray can about eight inches away from the exterior, spray two to three lean coats of automotive paint straight on the scratch. Let each coat dry for 30 minutes prior to applying the next coat.

Step 7: Using the same procedures as with spraying the paint, apply two coats of automotive clear coat. Let the automotive clear coat dry completely which takes up to 24 hours before attempting to drive the car.

Getting rid of the scuffs and scratches from your car’s plastic bumper can be costly especially when the job is done at a professional auto care clinic. However, you can save a lot if you do the repair yourself.

Prevent Your Commercial Dump Trucks From Breaking Down!

By: Christopher Hunter

The effective operation of commercial dump trucks depends to a large extent on whether preventive maintenance is set up for each vehicle and properly carried out at the appropriate intervals. Preventive maintenance is undoubtedly one of the best ways to cut costs and minimize breakdowns by trying to avoid any costly repairs, especially while on a job.

Preventive maintenance helps you protect the financial investment you have in your vehicle as well as allows you to keep your commitments to your customers. Your clients will not stay with you very long if you cannot keep your commitments to them and deliver your service on time.

Following is a list of preventive maintenance tips to help you keep your commercial dump trucks operational and providing service to your customers.

A thorough basic inspection that is done on a regular basis will alert you to any potential problems and allow for inexpensive replacement of a part rather than complex and expensive repairs caused when a part breaks down while the vehicle is operational. This should be done on a regular basis, both before extended usage and after prolonged usage.

• Tires – Check for overall tread wear as well as tire pressure. If you have dual tires, be sure to check the inner tire as well as the outer tire.
• Fuel – This may seem a little redundant – of course you would check your fuel to make sure you have enough! Were you aware that lower quantities of fuel cause engine deterioration? Make sure to use a better quality fuel and consider a lubricant to boost the capacity.
• Wipers – You have to be able to see out the front of the cab so make sure your wipers are functional as well as not too worn to be of value.
• Coolants – This level should be maintained at a proper balance. If the level varies to any extent, you may have some leakage going on that would need to be repaired right away.
• Head lights – These are the ‘eyes’ of your commercial dump trucks and must be working properly in both high beam and low beam. Anything else certainly needs to be taken care of before any night driving.
• Turn Signals and Brake Lights – This is similar to the head lights as they must function for not only your safety but the safety of those with whom you share the road!
• Horn – This is a vital piece of safety equipment that must be checked on a regular basis and repaired or replaced if not functioning properly.
• Air Filter – This should be changed on a regular basis to keep your engine properly performing and avoid potential engine problems. Retain the date of the last change for your records.
• Oil Change – Keeping the oil changed as recommended by the truck manufacturer is imperative and should be checked before each trip to see if you will need a change while on the road. It is much more cost-effective to do this as planned rather than have an urgent need and not be able to shop around for the best place and price.
• Hoses, especially Fuel – This is one of the items that is easily and inexpensively replaced before problems – and highly costly to repair the damage caused when one breaks while the truck is in use.
• Brake Oil – The level and quality should be checked regularly to ensure proper braking capacity and is a very important safety concern.
• Power Steering Fluid – Another safety item to ensure that the driver can properly steer the truck with ease.
• Fire Extinguisher – Make sure you have one and that it has not expired and/or needs to be recharged. This could save your life and the lives of others in an emergency situation!

Chesapeake Collision Repair Makes a Vehicle Like New After an Accident

By: Jeremy Smith

No one ever plans on getting into a car accident. It just happens. Afterwards, getting the vehicle repaired is priority. For those who live in the Hampton Roads region of Virginia, finding a reliable, affordable and trustworthy auto repair shop is the best plan of action. There are a few places that can accommodate the repairs, and a Chesapeake auto body shop can get the vehicle back on the road quickly and affordably. These are some of the services they offer.

Frame

One of the worst problems a vehicle can have after the accident is a bent frame. Many believe that a car is never the same after the frame is bent.

With new technology, however, a Chesapeake collision repair shop can make it feel like new. Choose a business that uses an efficient pulling system that can handle pulling from 360 degrees and multiple directions all at once. This will help the vehicle look like it used to, before the wreck. It will also improve its drivability and make it safer.

Cosmetic Damage

Bumps and fender benders can make it embarrassing to drive around Hampton Roads. It may not make it impossible to drive the vehicle, but most people would prefer not to do that. Paintless fixes are an option for auto repair in Chesapeake. When a new paint job in unavoidable, the consumer should choose a body shop that has state-of-the-art painting facilities and can handle more than one job at a time. This prevents customers from going several days without their vehicles while they are waiting for the paint booth to be available for their vehicle’s needs. A skilled professional in the painting booth can make a vehicle look like new, and the evidence of a car accident in Hampton Roads will soon disappear.

Mechanical Problems

Sometimes auto accidents involve more than external damage. Radiators are crushed, exhaust systems are bent and wheels are demolished upon force of impact. Alignment and transmission work are also frequent necessities to have fixed after a car accident. Hoses, brakes and light lenses may also need to be replaced. It is important to have a reliable and experienced professional to fix mechanical problems. It is also more convenient for the customer to have the vehicle completely fixed on both the outside and under the hood, rather than having to go to one place for external collision repair, then a mechanic to make the vehicle run properly.

Author writes about a variety of topics. If you would like to learn more about auto repair in Chesapeake, visit http://www.carstruction.com/about/.

Tips to Winterize Your Car

By: Tom Blackman

Making sure your car is prepared for winter is something that can make the difference once the cold weather really sets in. By doing the steps listed below, you can reduce to possibility of breakdowns and other cold-weather related problems.

1) Get An Oil Change That Is Right For Winter

Having oil that is the right viscosity for winter will help your engine in cold weather. As motor oil cools, it becomes thicker and loses its ability lubricate as effectively. It is important to make sure the oil you have in your engine during the winter is not too thick.

2) Replace Your Windshield Wiper Blades

It is recommended that you replace your windshield wiper blades a minimum of once per year. However, in areas that receive a lot of precipitation, it could be necessary more often. Having windshield wipers that can effectively clean your windshield is imperative for safe winter driving. This is something that can make the difference between being able to see and causing an accident.

3) Check You Battery

Extreme cold can really wear a battery. It is important to check all connections and posts to the battery to make sure they are free of corrosion and the battery has all of the water it needs. If your battery is more than three years old, take it to a local automotive service center and have them test the battery’s ability to hold a charge. As batteries age, they are less effective and lose their ability to start in cold weather.

4) Check Tire Pressure

Having tires that are properly inflated can help prevent your car from skidding on slick surfaces. Cold air can make tire pressure drop and it is important to check the tire pressure regularly in cold weather. Tires generally lose one pound of pressure per square inch for every ten degree Fahrenheit drop in temperature.

5) Get The Right Mixture of Antifreeze

Antifreeze should have a ratio of 50/50 antifreeze (coolant) to water. Having this ratio will prevent the mixture for freezing even at extreme temperatures and causing problems to the radiator. The mixture can be tested by using an inexpensive antifreeze testing kit. These are available at most automotive repair shops. If your antifreeze needs to be replaced, make sure you have it done properly as you cannot just pour old antifreeze down the drain.

6) Have An Emergency Kit

An emergency kit can provide the necessary essentials in case you should get stranded. Pack it with things like a blanket, extra boots and gloves, warm clothes, water and food (including hard candy. Also have a flashlight, flares, jumper cables, a first aid kit, paper towels, and sand or cat litter to help with traction. It is also important to keep your gas tank as full as possible to prevent the fuel line from freezing. It should not go below half in extreme cold.

Car Windshield Repair - Things You Should Know About!

By: Zac Cuares

The windshield of a car, motorbike, airplane, or even a window is an American terminology. In British terminology it is called windscreen and in Japanese English, it is called front glass. It is primarily used as protection from the wind, extreme temperatures, flying debris (such as pebbles, rocks, dust) and even ultra-violet rays for windshields with UV coating. Just like air bags and seat belts, windshields are very important safety devices. In case of a collision or upturn, windshields keep the passengers inside the car. When windshields are improperly installed, they can be a source of danger; they can puff out of their mounting when the air bag blows up.

How much is the Cost of a Windshield Repair?

• For small cracks or damages in the windshield that may not necessarily require a replacement, the repair cost could be minimal or it will vary on the intensity of the damage. The key to cost cutting is to address the problem before it gets worst.

• For damages that already require replacement, the cost is quite high and varies greatly on the type of car and the kind of glass that will be used.

You may avail the benefits of your comprehensive insurance if you have one to assist you with the financial aspect.

What are my Windshield Repair Options?

• Do the repair yourself.

This is a practical option for small cracks and damages to minimize the cost of repair. There are many do-it-yourself windshield repair kits available in the market. This will greatly help you do the repair yourself; saving on the cost of the repair and without the hassle of having to bring the car to a repair shop.

Simple steps to do a windshield repair:

Materials Needed -

• Razor Blade

• Windshield Repair Kit, which typically includes:

• Tube of Resin

• Suction Cup Tool

• Threaded Plastic Tube

• Clear Finishing Film

Steps to Do the Repair -

1. Clean the windshield’s surface, especially where the crack or damage is situated. Remove any small, loose pieces of glass with a razor blade. Use a windshield or window cleaner to wipe the surface and let it dry completely for the next step.

2. Fasten the suction tool device to the windshield and ensure that the hole is directly over the cracked surface. The suction cup tool consists of four suction cups connected to an x-frame with a hole in the center. Push down the cups securely to the glass and adjust the position of the hole when necessary by gliding the x-frame’s arms.

3. Put the threaded plastic tube in the suction cup tool’s hole. The tube should appear like a hollow, large bolt. Lock-in the tube in the threaded hole as tight as possible. Check the tube’s rubber tip to be on top of the window chip.

4. Set the tube of resin in the plastic tube, ensuring the resin tube’s cap open. Pinch drops of resin, about two to four into the tube and on the crack or damage. Remove the plastic tube’s center nozzle and screw it down the tube to help push the resin on the crack.

Vintage VW Parts Are Not Always the Best Parts

By: William Price

If you have experienced the magic of maintaining a Vintage VW engine you are familiar with the easy engine removal, the very convenient to work with engine size, the fast disassembly, and easy reassembly potential. Trying to use Vintage VW parts in a couple of areas can prove to be problematic.

One of the most common causes of engine failure, in the stock VW Beetle, and Karmman Ghia, is exhaust valve stem crystallization of the metal. The valve head frequently sheared into the combustion chamber. This Phenomena occurred historically, most often in Cylinder # 3.

The strength and elegance of the older VW engine is that it is air cooled. The blower sits on top of the engine and directs the flow of air through the oil cooler and onto cylinder #3. Apparently the heat in number 3 is sufficient to cause exhaust valve failure over time as the brass valve guides wear.

In the air cooled engine valves are cooled by contact with the valve seat, and contact with the valve guide. The Valve stem is polished, hardened steel, and the guide is brass. As the brass guide wears exhausting gas follows the valve stem into the guide further degrading the brass, and increasing the gap between the moving valve stem and the guide. The net result over time, particularly with the Vintage VW part cylinder #3, is breaking off the exhaust valve head, which enters the combustion chamber, and punches a hole through the piston. Incredibly, the VW engine can still run after this event, noisily at first, then quieter after the valve head finds its way into the crankcase. Obviously the engine will not run well, and the metal shards will eventually damage the crank case components.

It is common to see this type of failure as early as 60,000 miles. Failure is not 100% but likely enough to erode reliability confidence. If you are operating a high mileage VW engine, or rebuilding a Vintage VW engine, it is advisable to review options for replacing stock engine heads with custom heads, modified to remedy the weakness of the vintage VW parts.

Several re-manufacturers offer some very capable options to vintage VW parts. It is important to research all of your options as you make buying decisions for rebuilding or maintaining your older VW engines.

Transmission Slipping - Denver Colorado

By: Brian Zimmerman

Transmission Specialist – What Makes a Good Specialist

If you are looking for someone to work on your car, there are a lot of different factors that you are going to have to take into consideration. To begin with, you are going to want to make sure that you feel like you are in good hands. This is a matter of trust, and if you don’t feel that you trust the mechanic whom you have been using, you will want to make a change today. When you don’t trust your mechanic, you are putting yourself in danger of unnecessarily high costs and even further damage to your car. This is important especially when it comes to the transmission. You shouldn’t trust your car’s transmission with just anyone. You need to make sure that you have a transmission specialist.

The difference between a transmission specialist and someone who just works on cars is really a matter of specialization. As a matter of fact, most general mechanics will have a specialist on duty or a contractor that they send work out to. The reason is that there are many different kinds of transmissions for different kinds of vehicles. Each transmission is an extremely complex and sensitive part that must be worked on in an exact way, otherwise it will turn out to be a faulty part. For the record, transmissions are not cheap, and usually a used transmission is not worth the price of changing the fluid. In other words, make sure your specialist takes good care.

When it comes to finding the right transmission specialist, however, it might seem difficult to know if he or she is giving you a run for your money or not. How can you know that you trust a specialist until you have given that specialist a try? This is a good question, and with the help of the internet, you can now find the best transmission service for you. When you look online, you can tell a lot about a business. You can tell how much they value their customers, how skilled the workers are, and how much work they get. You want to find a webpage with a blog, customer testimonials, and a long history of dedicated community work.

The moral of the story is that if you need a transmissions specialist, you want to make sure that you are getting a professional who is willing to form a relationship with you and your car. This is the best way to feel that you will be getting excellent service time and again. You will be happy knowing that you are done not knowing what to expect. Instead, you will bring your car in to a specialist whom you are sure is going to be honest and charge you reasonable or even low prices.

Mazda 6 DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) Removal Breakthrough

By: Ajaz Elahi

The Mazda 6 DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) is designed to trap soot also known as particulate matter from escaping the exhaust system into the atmosphere. It's a great idea and works extremely well by reducing soot particles by up to 90%. In fact, it works a bit too well, so well that eventually it will block up and cause endless problems for the owner of the vehicle and until now, the only option was to replace the DPF with a new one which again will be waiting to get blocked again.

There is a process known as regeneration which your vehicle should do without your input, automatically every 200-300 or so miles which basically increases the temperature of the exhaust gasses to help burn off any soot trapped in the Diesel Particulate Filter box to unblock it so it can continue to work, however, this is not very effective and they continue to get blocked up to a point where even a forced regeneration is not possible.

Once the DPF has failed and a regeneration is not possible, your local dealer/garage will advise you buy unit. A new one will cost you in excess of £2000+ with parts, labour & vat. Buying a used / 2nd hand DPF is never advised as it will come partially blocked already and waiting to fail again. In fact, even with a new unit on your car it will not bring you complete piece of mind because the design of the Diesel Particulate Filter has not changed one bit, so you will be waiting for it to fail again.

If you drive with the DPF blocked, your vehicle will fall into LIMP mode (also known as LIMP HOME mode) and the Engine ECU will restrict the engines performance to 3000rpm to safeguard the engine and other mechanical components. With a blocked DPF, you will experience excess backpressure which could eventually weaken and blow the seals of your turbocharger and internal engine seals which will cause problems such as oil leaks and loss of power. So it's best to get the problem fixed now rather than later.

Until now, that was your only option but recently we (Sinspeed Ltd) announced that we have finally come up with a solution, a breakthrough in the Mazda 6 DPF nightmare. We have been for many years, removing the DPF (Diesel Particulate Filters) from other vehicles such as Vauxhalls, Audi's, VW's, Seats, Skoda's, Kia's & Jaguar's etc but until now no company in the world could remove the DPF from a Mazda 6 successfully without it falling into Limp Mode and having the speedo light up like a christmas tree with errors.

Sinspeed is the first & currently the only company in the whole of Europe and possibly the world, to be able to successfully remove the DPF from the Mazda 6 with zero errors. That's right, even if you're vehicle is already in LIMP mode (restricting the engine performance to 3000rpm) then Sinspeed can still help. We remove the DPF and reset the PCM/ECU module to bring it out of LIMP mode and turn off all error lights.

Once the vehicle has left our workshop, you will never experience a DPF error warning light come back on and never experience any problems with it ever again. For more information, call us on 0871 2887 666 today.

Sinspeed is the first company in the whole of Europe to successfully & professionally remove the DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) from the Mazda range diesel vehicles with zero errors. Check out our Mazda 6 DPF Removals article.

Car Repair Service – Finding a Quality Repairer

Sourcing a reliable and trustworthy car repair service is an important part of owning a car. Most of us know how to drive our cars but know little about the complex workings that go on under the bonnet, or in the computer systems of our car.

The cost of major repairs is much greater than the relatively small expense of having a minor car service once, or twice a year, depending on how frequently you drive you car.

We rely heavily on the expertise and knowledge that our car repair mechanic provides, thus having a service that you can trust and ask questions, no matter how simple they might seem, will help you to maintain your car, and extend the life of your cars parts.

Keeping your car running reliably and even extending its life can be achieved by finding a quality car repair service mechanic and maintaining regular servicing. Your mechanic is there to look out for potential issues, and to undertake any repairs to make your car safe.

Regular servicing is the best preventative as it means all of the major systems within your vehicle are being assessed by a professional on a regular basis, and the moving parts are keep well lubricated to reduce wear and tear. This can actually extend the life of your vehicle, as well as helping to maintain its value and reliability.

As well as being able to perform standard repairs on your vehicle, a car repair business can also offer many other car services including:

- safety checks - LPG gas conversions -diagnosis of electronic problems -log book servicing -tune ups

Look for a repairer who has been recommended or approved by your local motoring body. This means the business will have been reviewed to ensure that it meets standards for both service and experience.

A further level of assurance can be achieved by selecting a mechanic who provides guarantees, or warranties on work performed. Usually these warranties will cover both repairs as well as parts for a given period of time, or for a certain number of kilometres, whichever occurs first.

Cold Starting Devices for Diesel Engines

By: Marlon Khan

Attempting to start Diesel engines in cold or sub zero temperatures is extremely difficult and usually an impossible task, unless appropriate accessories has been added to the engine to assist in such starting.

The hard starting problems of diesel engines in below zero / freezing temperatures are caused by two factors. One is the initial cold air being drawn into the turbocharger and compressed into the engine’s cylinder head. The second is the fuel itself, is also cold and this sub zero / freezing temperature fuel is sprayed into the cold engine’s combustion chamber, where it mixes with the cold air drawn thru turbocharger.

Additional problems will result from fact that a cold starting diesel engine needs to reach at least two hundred (200) rpm to develop a four hundred (400) psi compression pressure to sufficiently compress the air to fuel mixture, and thus, resulting in combustion.

These two problems will result in the diesel fuel being sprayed into the combustion chamber, and it will condense on the cold surfaces of the cylinder liners or cylinder block. This liquid fuel will seep through the piston rings, and fall into the engine’s crankcase, diluting the lubricating oil in the process.

Two simple devices can be used to reduce the possibility that these conditions occur. One is by the use of battery heaters and glow plugs. No one device can be used. Usually a combination of several devices will provide an overall efficient starting process.

The efficiency of a battery drops as its temperature drops. A battery that is fully charged at 26 degrees C (80 degrees F) will have its starting capacity drop to approximately forty six percent (46%) available power at 17.7 degrees C below 0 (0 degrees F). Additionally, at this temperature, the engine will be approximately two and a half (2.5) times harder to start at -17.7 C (0 F) degrees due to thicker oil and resistance to movement of internal moving parts. This gets worst at lower temperatures are experienced.

To solve this, one of two common devices is used to heat the battery. One is a padded silicone covered, acid resistant rubber hot pad heater. This operates off of 110/120V and comes in various wattages. The power range can be 60W to 500W, and this can be used to heat the batteries, engine oil pan, fuel tank, hydraulic tank, and the water tank.

The other device that is typically used in conjunction with the hot pad is the glow plug. This is an internally fixed low voltage heating element that is fitted directly into the combustion chamber. When this is switched on, it can take up to two minutes to heat up, however, by that time it has reached approximately 700 degrees C (1652 degrees F) and the combustion chamber is hot enough to prevent the condensing of the diesel fuel, and thus, ignition is guaranteed.

Transmission Installation & Looking for Transmission Problems

By: Gregg Foss

The transmission is often one of the forgotten systems within your vehicle that if it not serviced regularly may end in you requiring a new transmission installation or major repair.

These are both potentially expensive and will require the services of a transmission expert.
Rather than ignoring the required servicing of your car, you are much better to maintain regular visits to your mechanic to ensure that the transmission fluid is kept at required levels, and that your transmission is checked by your mechanic to find any transmission problems early.

The longer you drive your vehicle with a transmission problem, potentially the more expensive the repair will end up being.

Transmission issues will vary depending on whether you drive a manual or automatic transmission car, but can include:

- engine or warning lights flashing on your dashboard
- car is lagging or pulling
- problems with changing gears
- grinding, buzzing and clunking noises

Automatic transmissions are run by quite complicated computers in modern vehicles. This means that cars are able to be more responsive on the road, but also that if anything goes wrong, you will need to see a transmission expert to have the issue checked. Specialist transmission repairers have the specific electronic testing equipment to quickly diagnose the problem for you, and to get you back on the road as quickly as possible.

Manually geared vehicles may be simpler to repair when they have a transmission problem, but that does not mean you can just forget about the transmission. The transmission in a manual car still requires lubrication to make sure all the working parts are moving cleanly. Rough changes of gear, and ‘riding the clutch’ will wear out your transmission system faster and could lead to a replacement transmission being required.

If you are experiencing any of the above issues, Transmission Physician, located in Hornsby, in the northern suburbs of Sydney, are transmission specialists, and are happy to assist you whether you have a manual or automatic transmission in a large or small car.

About Author Gregg Foss, of has been servicing transmissions, and undertaking transmission installation and repair in the Hornsby area for over 25 years and has clients coming from as far as Queensland for the quality of his service and expertise.

Taking Steps to Get a Car Back on the Road After a Collision

By: Jeremy Smith

Getting into an auto accident creates a host of tasks to keep up with until the matter is settled. From the moment the collision happens, the driver must take several steps to tend to injuries, vehicle damage and legal matters. The legal and physical matters require specialists, but so do any vehicles involved. If an accident occurs between two or more parties and no damage is done, the motorists may agree to go about their separate ways; otherwise, there are several tasks they may need to complete so that their vehicles will soon be back on the road in the same condition of use as they were before the accident.

One of the first tasks encountered is removing the vehicle from the scene. If it is drivable, this is usually no problem. If the vehicle is leaking fluids or the wheels are badly battered, the chances of driving the vehicle are slim. A wrecker can transport the vehicle to the owner’s home, auto body shop or collision repair center of choice.

While making arrangements, the vehicle owners will report the vehicle damage to the insurance company. This can result in a variety of procedures, depending on the circumstances. One request the insurance company may make is for the auto’s owner to take pictures of the damaged vehicles at the scene. If the person has already left the scene, they may take them as soon as is convenient. This will assist the insurance agent in understanding the scope of the accident and damage. The agent may come out to the vehicle to survey the damage in person and authorize repairs. This is sometimes done over the telephone, as well.

Next, the motorist should find a reliable collision center to do the repairs. The business should specialize in vehicle damage repair and restoration, inside and out.

Once the car owner has received an estimate and insurance approval, the company can do the work. If the insurance company does not authorize the work, the car owner can pay for it themselves instead. Most collision repair centers will take care of exterior car repairs, as well as problems under the hood.

One of the greatest concerns about vehicle repair is that once it has been fixed, the owner does not want people to know that their automobile has been in an accident. It is not only embarrassing, but may negatively affect the way other drivers behave around them. Having a quality repair job done may take a few days to a few weeks, depending on the extent of the damage.

If the car owner cannot be without transportation this long, a rental car can provide temporary service. A collision repair center may offer car rental while it repairs the automobile; otherwise, the vehicle’s owner will need to make their own arrangements or rely on other people for assistance. Once the vehicle is fixed, the motorist can get back on the road, business as usual.
